The Study of Two Grooved Stones from Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic Sites of Ba'ja and Basta (Jordan): A Biographical Approach

Abstract:

Předložená práce se zabývá studiem napřimovačů dříků v širší kategorii kamenných artefaktů s drážkou. Cílem je poskytnout komplexnější porozumění této podkategorii. Práce se snaží vysvětlit rozdílné funkce kamenných artefaktů s drážkou. Tyto funkce mohou být odvozeny ze surovin, ze který jsou nástroje vyrobeny, ale také z organických materiálů, které byly těmito nástroji napřimovány. Hlavním těžištěm této práce je detailní studium dvou kamenných artefaktů s drážkou z lokalit pozdního předkeramického neolitu, Basta a Ba’ja, v Jordánsku. Práce ověřuje platnost hypotézy, že tyto dva artefakty sloužily jako napřimovače dříků. Určení funkce je založeno na studiu a interpretaci tvaru předmětů, surovině, tvaru drážky, stop od výroby a používání artefaktů. Basta systemic approach je v této práci použit ke studiu drážkovaných kamenných nástrojů, i za hranicí běžné archeologické interpretace. Pomocí trasologických analýz bylo identifikováno několik stádií života artefaktu.

Abstract:

This thesis studies shaft straighteners within the broader category of grooved stones with the goal to provide a more complex understanding of the term shaft straighteners. The thesis aims to explain different functions of grooved stones based on the material of the tool as well as on the material which was straightened. The main focus of thesis is put on the detailed study of two grooved stones from Late PPNB sites Basta and Ba’ja in Jordan, examining the validity of the shaft straightener hypothesis for the two grooved stones from Basta and Ba’ja. Determination of the function of the tool is based on the research and interpretation of the shape of the object, material, shape of the groove, manufacturing and use traces. Basta systemic approach is adopted in the thesis to study the grooved stones behind the common archaeological interpretation. Different stages of life of the tool are identified through the use-wear analysis.
