Jean-Jacques Rousseau "Discourse on the Origin and the Foundations of Inequality among Men"

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je vyložit Rousseauovu rozpravu O původu nerovnosti mezi lidmi z roku 1755, z hlediska jejího obsahu, okolností vzniku a případné nadčasové relevance. Nejprve přistoupíme k Rousseauovu životopisu, následovat bude historický kontext doby vzniku rozpravy a dále se zaměříme na dobovou filosofii. Následně zařadíme Rozpravu O původu nerovnosti mezi lidmi do kontextu jeho dalších rozprav. Zejména se zaměříme na polemiku navazující na Rousseauovu první rozpravu O vědách a umění a její případný vliv na posun Rousseauova pojetí v Rozpravě následující. Následovat bude objasnění dvojznačnosti celé rozpravy a rozlišení dvou typů nerovností společně s rekonstrukcí Rousseauovy odpovědi na otázku jejich původu. Poté nastíníme posun Rousseauova pojetí některých ústředních myšlenek z rozpravy O původu nerovnosti v jeho Společenské smlouvě. V závěru pak naznačíme inspiraci, kterou se Rousseau stal pro následující generace.

Abstract:

The main goal of this thesis is to explain Rousseau's Discourse on the Origin and the Foundations of Inequality among Men from 1755 in terms of its content, the circumstances of its creation and its timeless relevance. At first we will approach Rousseau's biography followed by the historical context of the time of the creation of Discourse, and then we will focus on periodic philosophy. Then we will classify Discourse on the Origin of Inequality among Men in the context of its further discourses. Particularly, we will focus on the dispute surrounding Rousseau's First Discourse on the Art and Sciences and its possible influence on the advance of Rousseau's concept in the following Discourse. Then the clarification of ambiguity of the whole Discourse and distinguishing two types of inequalities together with the reconstruction of Rousseau's answer to the question of their origin will follow. Next we outline the shift Rousseau's conception of some central ideas of the Discourse on the Origin and the Foundations of Inequality among Men in his Social Contract. In conclusion, we will highlight the inspiration Rousseau has become for the next generation.
