H. Perruchot: The Life of Gauguin: between biography and novel

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor’s diploma thesis is the ambivalent nature of the biography La Vie de Gauguin by Henri Perruchot as far as its genre is concerned. The goal of this work is to familiarize the reader with this writer because he is relatively unknown in Czech Republic. But the main aim is to prove that this book, a part of the seven-piece series named Art et Destin and consisting of the biographies of the precursors of modern painting, is not a pure biography as it is usually defined. Since the author uses the narrative process proper to fiction, the book transcends the limits of non-fiction literature and resembles a novel.

Abstract:

Předmětem studia této bakalářské práce je upřesnění žánru biografického díla La Vie de Gauguin od francouzského spisovatele Henri Perruchota. Cílem bylo jednak přiblížit čtenáři tohoto autora, o kterém existuje v češtině jen minimum informací a především pak dokázat na této konkrétní knize ze sedmidílného biografického cyklu Art et Destin, věnovaného předchůdcům moderního malířství, že se nejedná čistě o biografii, jak je toto dílo klasifikované, ale že autor využívá ve vyprávění typicky fikčních postupů, díky čemuž dílo přesahuje daný rámec literatury faktu a podobá se spíše románu.
