Gender Wage Differences in the European Union Countries

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje mzdovým rozdílům mezi muži a ženami v zemích Evropské unie. Cílem práce je vyhodnotit genderové mzdové rozdíly v zemích Evropské unie. Teoretická část se bude zabývat vymezením základních pojmů v oblasti mzdového ohodnocení pracovní síly, důvody existence mzdových rozdílů. Praktická část bude věnována analýze problému genderových mzdových rozdílů na základě veřejně dostupných dat z databází jako je například Eurostat. Mimo výše zmíněný hlavní cíl tato práce poskytuje čtenáři stručné uvedení do tématu. První kapitola je čistě teoretická část, kde jsou vysvětleny hlavní pojmy v souvislosti s trhem práce, pracovní silou a tvorbou mezd. Na úvodní kapitolu navazuje další část s vymezením několika nejvýznamnějších důvodů výskytu genderových mzdových rozdílů na trhu práce. Kapitola třetí je věnována zejména strategiím EU ve směru k dosažení genderové rovnosti, a nakonec závěrečná kapitola práce číslo čtyři se věnuje tomuto tématu z empirického pohledu na základě veřejně dostupných dat z databází jako je například Eurostat prostřednictvím vytvořených grafů, tabulek a jejich věcnými popisy z již získaných vědomostí. Postupným zjištěním práce je, že příčiny genderové mzdové nerovnosti jsou velice komplexní, tedy nelze se zaměřit pouze na jednu z nich. Za nejvýznamnější důvody těchto rozdílů lze vyzdvihnout zejména rozdíly ve smyslu horizontální a vertikální segregace pracovního trhu a v určité míře s tím související stále přetrvávající lidské stereotypy ohledně historicky vžitých rolí žen, jejich předpokladů a práce. Dalším dosaženým závěrem je fakt, že postupná snaha o eliminaci těchto genderových mzdových rozdílů napříč Evropskou unií není rozhodně krátkodobou záležitostí, avšak dostupná data naznačují mírný pokles průměrného vývoje těchto rozdílů napříč státy Evropské unie v průběhu let.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis addresses the gender wage gap in the countries of the European Union. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate gender wage disparities within the European Union countries. The theoretical part will focus on defining the basic concepts in the field of wage determination, as well as the reasons for the existence of wage disparities. The practical part will be devoted to analyzing the issue of gender wage disparities based on publicly available data from databases such as Eurostat. In addition to the aforementioned main objective, this thesis provides the reader with a brief introduction to the topic. The first chapter is purely theoretical, explaining the main concepts related to the labor market, workforce, and wage formation. This is followed by another section defining several significant reasons for the occurrence of gender wage disparities in the labor market. Chapter three is dedicated primarily to EU strategies towards achieving gender equality. Finally, the concluding chapter, Chapter Four, addresses this topic from an empirical perspective based on publicly available data from databases such as Eurostat, through the creation of graphs, tables, and their descriptive analysis based on the acquired knowledge. Through the gradual findings of this thesis, it is evident that the causes of gender wage inequality are highly complex, thus it is not possible to focus solely on one of them. Among the most significant reasons for these disparities, differences in terms of horizontal and vertical segregation of the labor market can be highlighted, along with the persisting human stereotypes regarding historically ingrained roles of women, their assumptions, and work. Another conclusion reached is that the gradual effort to eliminate these gender wage disparities across the European Union is definitely not a short-term matter; however, available data indicate a slight decline in the average development of these disparities across the European Union states over the years.
