The impact of buildings on bird movement and migration: an analysis of barriers and risks in urbanized landscapes

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou vlivu budov na pohyb a migraci ptáků v urbanizovaných krajinách. Hlavním cílem je analýza srážek ptáků s prosklenými plochami budov a hodnocení rizik, které tyto kolize představují pro biodiverzitu v městském prostředí. Práce zahrnuje jak teoretickou část, zaměřenou na ornitofaunu, pohyb, orientaci a migraci ptáků, tak praktickou část, ve které byla pomocí terénního pozorování a analýzy dat prozkoumána frekvence kolizí ptáků s prosklenými plochami vybraných budov v městě Třinec. Získané výsledky umožňují identifikovat klíčové faktory, které přispívají k vyššímu riziku srážek ptáků a podněcují další výzkum v této oblasti. Práce rovněž přispívá k zvýšení veřejného povědomí o problému srážek ptáků se sklem a podporuje iniciativy vedoucí k udržitelnějšímu žití člověka a přírody v harmonii.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the impact of buildings on the movement and migration of birds in urbanized landscapes. The main objective is to analyse bird collisions with glazed surfaces of buildings and to assess the risks that these collisions pose to biodiversity in urban environments. The thesis includes both a theoretical part, focusing on the ornithofauna, movement, orientation and migration of birds, and a practical part, in which the frequency of bird collisions with glazed surfaces of selected buildings was investigated in the city of Třinec using field observations and data analysis. The results obtained allow the identification of key factors that contribute to a higher risk of bird collisions and encourage further research in this area. The work also contributes to raising public awareness of the problem of bird collisions with glass and supports initiatives leading to more sustainable living in harmony between humans and nature.
