Archaeology of the River

Abstract:

Ačkoliv má říční archeologie v sousedních zemích dlouhou tradici, její rozvoj je v České republice stále v počátečních fázích. Dizertační práce má proto za úkol prezentovat výsledky pilotní studie zaměřené na archeologické nálezy z řek Moravy a Dyje. Sledovaná oblast byla vymezena katastry, kterými řeky protékají; celkem jej tvoří přes 340 katastrálních území. Počáteční fáze práce byla zaměřena na zpracování dostupných písemných zdrojů a jejich vyhodnocení; na základě výsledků byla vytvořena databáze obsahující záznamy sledovaných archeologických situací. Na ploše asi 350 říčních kilometrů bylo zjištěno vice než 150 komponent, které tvořily zejména jednotlivé říční nálezy datované od paleolitu do raného středověku. Předložená dizertační práce měla za cíl nalézt odpovědi na několik zásadních otázek: Do jaké míry lze interpretovat evidované říční nálezy? Jaký je vztah jejich distribuce k archeologickým komponentám na souši? Jaký obraz vytváří kulturně historická distribuce říčních nálezů a souvisejících archeologických struktur v prostoru? A v neposlední řadě, jaká je příčina objevu těchto komponent? Dizertační práce by měla na tyto otázky poskytnout relevantní odpovědi a přispět tak k lepšímu pochopení vztahu člověka a řeky v minulosti.

Abstract:

Although river archaeology has a long tradition in neighbouring countries, its development in the Czech Republic is still in the fledgling stage. The presented thesis shall, therefore, present the results of a pilot study focusing on river archaeological finds from the Morava and Thaya rivers. The area under observation was delimited by cadastres through which the rivers flow; altogether over 340 cadastral areas. The initial stage of the study focused on researching available written sources, and their evaluation; based on the results, a database containing records of observed archaeological components was created. More than 150 archaeological components, especially isolated river finds, dated from the Palaeolithic up to the Early Middle Ages, have been spread over some 350 river kilometres. The thesis seeks answers to several crucial questions: To what extent are we able to interpret the finds identified in rivers? What is the relation of the distribution of river finds to the archaeological components on land? What does the cultural historical distribution of river finds and archaeological situations look like? And last but not least, what caused the discovery of the observed river finds and archaeological situations? The thesis shall provide answers to these questions, and, thus, contribute to our understanding the relationship between man and river in the past.
