Raman Spectroscopy for Contraband Detection

Abstract:

Ramanova spektrometrie je technikou velmi vhodnou pro primární screening vzorků, u kterých je podezření, že by se mohlo jednat o kontraband. Širšího zájmu se technice dostalo s methanolovou aférou v roce 2012. Tato technika dokáže zcela unikátně detekovat a kvantifikovat množství obsaženého methanolu a ethanolu přes obal láhve bez nutnosti jejího otevření, a to v řádech sekund. V terénní praxi v rámci IZS je technika často využívána k primární identifikaci omamných a psychotropních látek zajištěných na místech činu nebo při domovních prohlídkách. Výzvou posledních let je snaha o spolehlivou identifikaci tzv. nových syntetických drog. Ramanova spektrometrie je také určena pro identifikaci potencionálně výbušných látek nebo jejich prekurzorů. Pro účely identifikace co možná nejširšího spektra výbušnin je vhodné doplnit techniku Ramanovy spektrometrii i o měření doplňkovou technikou infračervené spektrometrie. Nejvýznamnější limitací Ramanovy spektrometrie obecně je vcelku častý výskyt fluorescence u měřených vzorků, která znesnadňuje zisk spekter u měřených vzorků. Pro rutinní využití je vyjma fluorescence u Ramanovy spektrometrie limitující i množství látek obsažených v knihovně spekter daného používaného přístroje, přičemž spektrální databáze nejsou u různých typů těchto spektrometrů přenositelné. Množství spekter přítomných v databázi koreluje s rozsahem látek, které je možno daným spektrometrem identifikovat.

Abstract:

Raman spectrometry is a very suitable technique for the primary screening of samples suspected of being contraband. The technique gained wider interest with the methanol affair in 2012. This technique can uniquely detect and quantify the amount of methanol and ethanol contained through the packing of bottle without opening it, in seconds. In field practice within the IZS, the technique is often used for the primary identification of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances seized at crime scenes or during house searches. The challenge of recent years is the effort to reliably identify the so-called new synthetic drugs. Raman spectrometry is also designed to identify potentially explosive substances or their precursors. To identifying the widest possible range of explosives, it is appropriate to supplement the Raman spectrometry with measurement by an additional technique of infrared spectrometry. The most significant limitation of Raman spectrometry in general is the relatively frequent occurrence of fluorescence in the measured samples, which makes it difficult to obtain spectra in the measured samples. For routine use, except for fluorescence in Raman spectrometry, the number of substances contained in the library of spectra of the instrument used is also limiting, while the spectral databases are not transferable for different types of these spectrometers. The number of spectra present in the database correlates with the range of substances that can be identified by the spectrometer.
