Operation Barbarossa in perception of the Protectorate press against the background of the Soviet-German relations

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá sovětsko-německými vztahy v období druhé světové války. Soustředí se na období mezi lety 1939 a 1941 a zachycuje utváření vzájemných vztahů, které vyvrcholilo operací Barbarossa. Teoretická část objasňuje kontext zahájení operace Barbarossa s důrazem na význam paktu Ribbentrop-Molotov a charakter českého protektorátního tisku. Empirická část práce je založena na analýze čtyř protektorátních periodik, a to Lidových novin, Venkova, Poledního listu a Večera. Cílem práce je zachytit způsob, jakým bylo o operaci Barbarossa informováno nacistickým Německem. Pomocí narativní analýzy práce odhaluje, jaké narativy byly předkládané protektorátním tiskem a jak se odlišují. Práce zároveň zachycuje argumenty Německa k ospravedlnění provedení útoku na Sovětský svaz.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the Soviet-German relations during the second world war. It examines the period between the years 1939 and 1941, emphasizing the evolution of the relations and operation Barbarossa as a culmination. The theoretical part clarifies the context of the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, focusing on the Soviet-German Nonaggression pact. It also examines the character of the protectorate press. Empirical part is based on the analysis of four protectorate press – Lidové noviny, Venkov, Polední list and Večer. The thesis aims to find a way of informing about the Operation Barbarossa by Nazi Germany. Using narrative analysis, it shows narratives of Operation Barbarossa presented by Nazi Germany in the protectorate press and how they differ. It also analyses arguments used by Germany to justify the attack on the Soviet Union.
