Interparental Conflict and Fears of Thirteen Year Olds: The Role of Mother/Father-Child Relationship

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje problematice strachů třináctiletých dětí a jejich vztahu k vnímaným charakteristikám konfliktu mezi rodiči. Dále se zabývá souvislostí mezi vnímaným rodičovským konfliktem a kvalitou vztahu s matkou a otcem. V teoretické části je nejprve vymezena emoce strachu a determinanty jejího vývoje (zejména vlivy rodinného prostředí). Poté jsou představeny hlavní teorie vlivu rodičovského konfliktu na dítě: kognitivně–kontextuální rámec, teorie emoční jistoty a specifický emoční model. Nakonec jsou zmíněna empirická zjištění o souvislosti rodičovského konfliktu a vztahu rodič-dítě (hypotéza vedlejšího efektu, vytváření „obětního beránka“, triangulace,parentifikace, vliv výchovného stylu,perspektiva observačního učení, kompenzační hypotéza, systémový přístup aj.). Ve výzkumu byly použity metody Koláč strachu a FSSC II (Seznam pro zjištění dětských strachů); IPPA (Dotazník citové vazby k rodičům a vrstevníkům) a CPIC (Škála dětské percepce konfliktu mezi rodiči). Bylo zjištěno, že strachy o rodinu jsou u třináctiletých významně zastoupeny, častěji než strachy o kamarády. Dívky vypovídaly o vyšším výskytu i vyšší míře strachů o rodinu než chlapci. V míře strachu z rodičů se chlapci a dívky nelišili. V korelační studii byly zjištěny nejvýznamnější souvislosti mezi strachy (např.ze selhání/kritiky, ze smrti a z ohrožení) a vnímaným ohrožením z rodičovského konfliktu. Vztahy mezi strachy a sebeobviňováním či účinností zvládání rodičovského konfliktu byly spíše slabé. Souvislosti mezi vnímaným rodičovským konfliktem a vztahem rodič-dítě byly prokázány především v oblasti důvěry k matce (u obou pohlaví), a to u dimenzí ohrožení, sebeobviňování a intenzita konfliktu. Zatažení do konfliktu rodičů (triangulace)souviselo s nižší důvěrou k matce pouze u dívek. Ukázalo se také, že vysoká jistota ve vztahu k matce může působit jako moderátor vztahu vnímaného ohrožení z rodičovského konfliktu a strachu z rodičů (v podmínkách vysoké jistoty v citové vazbě je tato souvislost nižší). Výsledky výzkumu jsou porovnávány s předloženými teoriemi a empirickými zjištěními, jsou zmíněny limity výzkumu a v závěru navržena další výzkumná témata.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the fears of thirteen-year-old children and their relation to some characteristics of perceived interparental conflict. It also deals with the relations between perceived interparental conflict and the quality of relationship with mother and father. In the theoretical part the emotion of fear and determinants of its development (particularly the role of family background) are explained first. Subsequently, main theories dealing with the impact of marital discord on child are presented: cognitive-contextual framework, emotional security theory, and specific emotion model. At the end of this part, empirical findings about relation between marital discord and parent–child relationship are discussed (spillover hypothesis, scapegoating, triangulation, parentification, observational learning perspective, compensatory hypothesis, system approach etc.) In the empirical study the following methods were used: “The Cake of Fears”, FSSC II – The Fear Survey Schedule for Children II, IPPA – The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, CPIC - Children‘s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale. It was discovered that fears for family occur very frequently, more often than fears for friends. Girls confirmed more frequent and greater fears for family than boys. In the issue of fears for parents, girls and boys did not differ significantly. In the correlation study significant associations between fears (e.g. fears of failure/criticism, fear of death and danger) and perceived threat of interparental conflict were found out. The relations between fears and self blaming or children’s ability to cope with interparental conflict were rather poor. The links between perceived interparental conflict and parent-chid relationship were first of all verified in trust for mother (by both genders), specifically in the dimensions of threat, selfblaming and intensity of conflict. Triangulation was proved to be associated with lower trust for mother only in the case of girls. It was also proved that security in relationship with mother can work as a mediator of the relation between the perceived threat of interparental conflict and the fear of parents (in conditions of high security in the bond this impact proved to be lower). The results of this study are compared with presented theories and empirical findings. Furthermore, the limitations of the study are mentioned and in conclusion new topics for another research are suggested.
