Solutions of hurricane damages in Florida

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce s názvem Řešení škod způsobených hurikány na Floridě se zabývá především změnami v pojišťovnictví v posledních dvou desetiletích. V tomto období vyčnívají dva hlavní mezníky -- rok 1992 s velmi silným hurikánem Andrew, kdy stát Florida začal prvně komplexně řešit legislativu týkající se pojišťovnictví a stavebnictví, a období sedmi větších hurikánů v letech 2004 a 2005, které vysokým množstvím katastrof v krátkém časovém úseku donutilo pojišťovny a zajišťovny připravit se na podobné situace, zejména změnou predikčního modelu ztrát (angl. loss model). Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza dopadů těchto hurikánů na pojistný trh a ekonomiku na Floridě a analýza jejich řešení pomocí státních zásahů, dále poté přiblížení vzniku a vývoje sofistikovaných modelů ztrát a nastínění spolupráce národních a nadnárodních organizací jako důsledku přírodních katastrof, zejména hurikánů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis titled Solutions of hurricane damages in Florida deals mainly with changes in the insurance industry in the past two decades. Two major milestones stand out from this period: year 1992 with very strong Hurricane Andrew, when the state of Florida first began to deal with legislation on insurance and construction in comprehensive manner, and period of seven major hurricanes in 2004 and 2005, which, because of such high number of disasters in a very short time, forced the insurance and reinsurance companies to prepare themselves for similar situations. That was put into practice particularly by changing the loss model. The objective of this work is to analyze the impact of those hurricanes on the insurance market and on the economy of Florida and to analyze solutions of these impacts, which use state interventions. Further objectives are taking a close look on the emergence and development of sophisticated loss models and outlining cooperation between national and multinational organizations, resulting from natural disasters (especially hurricanes).
