Utilization of content-based retrieval for summarization of image collections

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je navrhnout a realizovat nástroj, který umožní vizualizovat a efektivně prezentovat netriviální množiny obrázků. Zatímco běžný prohlížeč obrázků řadí fotografie na základě popisných metadat, nový nástroj bude fotografie tematicky třídit a seskupovat podle vizuální podobnosti. V nejvyšší úrovni zobrazení poskytne rychlý přehled o obsahu celé kolekce, dále bude umožňovat detailní procházení jednotlivých skupin obrázků. V práci je použita knihovna MESSIF, která již obsahuje mnoho funkcí pro podobnostní vyhledávání včetně metod pro seskupování obrázků podle podobnosti. Zaměříme se zejména na optimální využití těchto metod pro daný účel a dále rozebereme možnosti, jak k obrazovým datům získat související klíčová slova, a vhodně tuto funkcionalitu do aplikace začleníme. Důležitým aspektem práce je i srozumitelné a intuitivní rozhraní výsledné aplikace. Klíčové je i provedení kritické evaluace kvality nástroje, přičemž se zaměřujeme na úspěšnost shlukování obrázků a anotací i na použitelnost výsledné aplikace.

Abstract:

The goal of this work is to analyze and create a tool that is able to visualize and effectively represent nontrivial set of images. While a standard image browsing software orders the photographs chronologically or according to its descriptive meta-data, the new tool is able to present images grouped by the context of similarity – in other words it enables browsing the images according to its visual similarity. In the highest level it provides a general overview of the whole collection. In addition to that it enables browsing in two other levels – cluster view and gallery view. This work builds up on MESSIF library that already features several functions for similarity-based searching and content-based image retrieval including basic clustering approach. We focus on leveraging these methods and enhancing them to be optimal for photograph clustering. We study the possibility of image annotation and suggest several methods for cluster annotating. Using MUFIN Image Annotation we implement some of these methods and integrate automatically generated keywords to the presentation of clustered data. Very important aspect of this work is high-level user experience which goes in hand with friendly user interface.
