Rule-Based Parsing of Morphologically Rich Languages

Abstract:

V práci se zabývám syntaktickou analýzou morfologicky bohatých jazyků, zejména češtiny. Úvodem kriticky shrnuji současný stav spočívající v dominantním paradigmatu statistické syntaktické analýzy, jeho obecnému aplikačnímu využití a použitelnosti i běžnému způsobu vyhodnocování. Toto shrnutí je uváděno v historickému kontextu, který považuji za důležitý pro jeho pochopení. Zastávám se více flexibilních a praktických přístupů k syntaktické analýze, které staví na pravidlových základech. Zastávám se využití extrinsického vyhodnocování nezávislého na konkrétní teorii s cíle zvýšit praktickou použitelnost syntaktické analýzy. Uvádím dva konkrétní příklady a implementované systémy zaměřené na různé úkoly, na kterých jsem pracoval. První se zaměřuje na analýzu velkých souborů dat s cílem extrahovat z těchto dat jazykové znalosti a je vyhodnocen na úkolu extrakce českých kolokací. Druhý se zabývá analýzou jednotlivých vět a je vyhodnocen na přínosu k morfologické desambiguaci češtiny. V textu práce se také zabývám teoretickým pozadím i praktickou implementací a škálovatelností obou systému a jejich vhodností pro syntaktickou analýzu morfologicky bohatých jazyků.

Abstract:

In this thesis I discuss parsing of morphologically-rich languages, particularly Czech. I start with a rather critical review of the state-of-the-art in terms of the dominant paradigm (statistical parsing), its general applicability and usability as well as mainstream evaluation practices. I put the discussion into a historical context which, I believe, is a key for its understanding. I argue for more flexible and more practical approaches to parsing that might have a rule-based backbone. I argue for theory-agnostic extrinsic evaluation to be used in parsing to increase its practical usability. I show two particular approaches and implemented systems targeting different tasks that I have been working on. The first focuses on large-scale parsing with the aims of extracting linguistic knowledge from large amounts of texts, and is evaluated on a collocation extraction task for Czech. The other focuses on parsing of isolated sentences and is evaluated on its contribution to part-of-speech tagging of Czech. I discuss the theoretical background as well as practical implementation and scalability of both systems and their suitability for parsing morphologically- rich languages.
