Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o čínské imigraci do Velké Británie a analyzuje její integrační proces ve většinové společnosti, jak ho ve svých novelách popsali Sax Rohmer a Timothy Mo. Vztah mezi Británií a její čínsko minoritou je pozoruhodný pro svoji klidnou a nerušivou povahu. V průběhu britsko-čínské historie se čínské minoritě podařilo uchovat si svůj nenápadný profil ve vztahu k většinové společnosti Británie. Vztah mezi těmito dvěma kulturami je nicméně pozoruhodný pro otázky bezprostředně se týkající lidské identity. Anglický jazyk a rozdílné kulturní a sociální hodnoty stále představují problém pro čínské imigranty. I přesto zjišťujeme, že Číňané vždy přispívali celkovému společenskému blahobytu, jejich integrace není zdaleka úplná zejména na základní mezilidské úrovni. Číňané rychle převzali jak ekonomický, tak politický systém země, ale mluvit o sjednocené britsko-čínské komunitě je problematické dokonce i v dnešní době. Touha uchovat si britskou identitu a také filozofické pozadí v devatenáctém století (např.: teorie přirozeného výběru, či Sociální darwinismus), odcizili čínskou minoritu převážné většině britského obyvatelstva. Neschopnost pochopit čínskou identitu se projevila zejména na fenoménu tzv. „žluté hrozby,“ která značně poškodila čínskou reputaci a znevážila její status na další dekády. Na druhé straně, Číňané nikdy nepřikládali větší důraz na jejich integraci. V dnešní době pouze nejmladší generace vykazuje známky větší integrace do většinové společnosti. Diplomová práce sleduje proces čínské imigrace do Velké Británie od devatenáctého století až do dnešní doby a dovoluje nahlédnout do tohoto unikátního soužití.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Chinese immigration in the UK and analyses their integration process in the mainstream society of Britain in literary works of Sax Rohmer and Timothy Mo. The relationship between Britain and its Chinese minority is remarkable for its smooth and unobtrusive nature. In the course of the British-Chinese history, the Chinese managed to keep a low profile in relation to British society. However, the British-Chinese relation is also disturbing for the issues that are directly related to one’s identity. The English language and contrastive cultural and social values pose a problem for Chinese immigrants. Although the Chinese have always contributed to the general welfare, their integration is far from absolute even on the basic interpersonal level. The Chinese have readily come to terms with the economic and political system but to speak of the united British-Chinese community is problematic even in the context of contemporary Britain. The desire to keep the notion of Britishness, and the philosophical background of nineteenth-century Britain (e.g. natural selection, Social Darwinism) have made the Chinese “distant” to the vast majority of the British. The failure to grasp the Chinese and their identity made itself apparent in the phenomenon of the “yellow peril” which considerably harmed the reputation of the Chinese and disparaged their status for the following decades. The Chinese, on the other hand, have never assigned importance to their integration. Nowadays, only the youngest generation of the Chinese indicates greater connection with the mainstream. In general, the thesis follows the Chinese immigration in the UK since the nineteenth century to the present day and gives insight into this unique relationship.
