Urban Music Culture in Moravia ca 1500-1620. Royal Cities in Central European Context.

Abstract:

V případě předkládané disertační práce byla pozornost věnována čtyřem moravským městům: Brnu, Znojmu, Jihlavě a Olomouci. Městům, jejichž společnými znaky v předbělohorském období byly velikost, charakter a jazyková orientace. Jedná se totiž o čtyři největší královská města na Moravě s německy mluvící většinou obyvatelstva. K hlavním centrům hudebního dění patřily shodně městské farní kostely a k nim náležící školy (Brno – kostel sv. Jakuba, Znojmo – kostel sv. Mikuláše a sv. Michala, Jihlava – kostel sv. Jakuba, Olomouc – kostel sv. Mořice). Představení hudebního provozu ve jmenovaných institucích tvoří hlavní cíl předkládané práce. Kantoři, školní mistři a jejich pomocníci, varhaníci a věžní, tedy hlavní osobnosti městské hudební kultury v 16. století, byli placeni částečně z peněz kostelních, ale především z rozpočtu města. S tím souvisí množství pramenů institucionálního charakteru. Shodně se ve všech městech jedná o knihy městských a kostelních účtů, o knihy městské korespondence, knihy testamentů, sbírky matrik a jiné písemnosti. Celé téma je pak zasazeno do širších středoevropských souvislostí, protože právě studium moravských pramenů ukázalo, že na hudební kulturu čtyř vybraných měst nelze nahlížet jako na celek, aniž bychom nevzali v potaz polohu blízko Vídně a dnešní Bratislavy. Zkoumané prameny poskytují nepřetržitou řadu jmen školních a kostelních zaměstnanců téměř ve všech městech. Dozvídáme se o konkrétních hudebních povinnostech kantora a žáků, přičemž k těm nejzajímavějším se řadí zpěv u Božího hrobu ve Svatém týdnu, účast na procesích Božího těla, chorální i figurální zpěv v době adventní nebo účast při obnovování městských rad a jiných slavnostech ve městě. Ve většině případů se těchto slavností účastnili i městští trubači, o nichž prameny hovoří shodně ve všech vybraných městech. Díky provedenému bádání napříč všemi městy, tj. systematickému studiu archivních pramenů nehudebního charakteru a shrnutí již publikovaných dílčích závěrů, můžeme předložit nové poznatky o hudebním dění v městských farních kostelích ve vybraných městech na Moravě v předbělohorském období a porovnávat je s dosud známými zmínkami z jiných měst.

Abstract:

In the case of the submitted work, the attention was paid to four Moravian cities: Brno, Znojmo, Jihlava and Olomouc. Before the Battle of White Mountain, the common features of these were their size, nature and language orientation. They are four largest royal cities in Moravia with the German-speaking majority of population. The main centres of musical events were municipal parish churches and the schools which belonged to them (Brno – Church of St. James, Znojmo – St. Nicholas' Deanery Church and Archangel Michael's Church, Jihlava – Church of St. James the Greater, Olomouc – Church of Saint Maurice). The main aim of the submitted doctoral thesis is the introduction of the musical operation in the specified institutions. Cantors, schoolmasters and their assistants, organists and tower keepers, i.e. the main personalities of the music culture in cities in 16th century, were partially paid from the church money but mainly from the city budget. This is related to the number of sources of the institutional nature. In all these cities, these are books of municipal and church accounts, books with city correspondence, books of last wills, vital records and other documents. The whole topic is then framed in the wider perspective of Central European context because the research of Moravian sources revealed that the music culture of the four selected cities cannot be seen as a whole unless we take into account their location near Vienna and today’s Bratislava. The researched sources provide a continuous series of names of school and church employees in almost all cities. We learn about particular cantor’s and pupils’ musical obligations. Some of the most interesting ones are singing at the Holy Sepulcher during Holy Week, the participation in Corpus Christi processes, choral and figural singing during Advent or the participation in renewal of municipal councils and other festivities in the city. In most cases, also city trumpeters participated in these festivities and sources mention them in all the selected cities. Thanks to the performed inquiry across all cities, i.e. a systematic study of archive sources not related to music and summaries of already published partial conclusions, we can bring up new insights on the musical history in municipal parish churches in selected cities in Moravia before the Battle of White Mountain and compare them to the previously known mentions from other cities.
