Anglo-american imprints in Quebec rap: anglicisms in Sir Pathétik's songs

Abstract:

This master’s thesis deals with the influence of English on Quebec French. The study is based on a corpus of rap songs of a Francophone rapper Sir Pathétik. The theoretical part explains some basic terms concerning loan words, language contact and functional characteristics of rap songs. The thesis focuses on the anglicisms in the corpus made of 109 rap songs with almost 400 lexical units. The practical part of the thesis firstly introduces the corpus and then offers its partial analyses, such as integration of the anglicisms into French, their classification into categories according to the type or lexicographical point of view (presence or absence of the lexical units in two monolingual Quebec dictionaries USITO and Dictionnaire québécois-français and in two monolingual French dictionaries Le Petit Larousse Illustré 2012 and Le Petit Robert 2012. Then we will be able to decide if the degree of dictionarisation in the Quebec dictionaries is higher than in the French ones. The next chapter compares general pronunciation in the dictionaries with the individual pronunciation of Sir Pathétik. The partial analyses, including the analysis dealing with code-switching, enable us to determine if the quantitative analyses reflect French native speakers’ individual preferences to the Anglophones.

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem angličtiny na quebeckou francouzštinu na příkladu textů frankofonního rappera Sira Pathétika. V teoretické části jsou usouvstažněny základní pojmy vztahující se k procesu přejímání, konktaktu jazyků a k funkční charakteristice rapových textů. Východiskem pro analýzu anglicismů se stal korpus 109 rapových textů Sira Pathétika, který obsahuje téměř 400 lexikálních jednotek (s převahou jednoslovných výpůjček). Na základě analýzy stupně integrace jednotlivých anglicismů do francouzštiny je v úvodu praktické části provedena klasifikace sledovaných výpůjček. Dále jsou tyto jednotky zkoumány z komparativního hlediska lexikografického (výskyt či absence ve dvou referenčních quebeckých slovnících USITO a Dictionnaire québécois-français a dvou referenčních francouzských - Le Petit Larousse Illustré 2012 a Le Petit Robert 2012), které má za cíl ověřit hypotézu o vyšší míře dikcionarizace v quebeckých slovnících oproti slovníkům francouzským. Dále je provedena analýza odchylek ve výslovnosti anglicismů Sirem Pathétikem oproti uzuální výslovnosti uváděné v quebeckých a francouzských slovnících. Tyto analýzy včetně poslední dílčí, která zkoumá střídání kódu u Sira Pathétika, mají za cíl rozhodnout, zda lze na základě kvantitativních analýz rozhodnout o individálních preferencích mluvčích ve vztahu k anglofonnímu světu.
