Pickering Emulsions for Encapsulation of Curcumin

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo zpracovat literární rešerši, která sloužila jako podklad pro zpracování praktické části. Rešerše se věnuje kurkuminu jako aktivní látce, která nese potenciál uplatnění v oblasti kosmetiky či farmacie. Další část je věnována kosmetickým vehikulům vhodným jako nosiče lipofilního kurkuminu. Zvláště je kladen důraz na Pickeringovy emulze stabilizované kaseinátem sodným a částicemi nanokrystalické celulózy. Kurkuminové Pickeringovy emulze jsou následně v praktické části práce připraveny metodou layer-by-layer a charakterizovány pomocí měření velikosti emulzních kapek laserovou difrakcí, stanovení indexu krémování a vizuálního hodnocení stability. Tyto emulze jsou základem pro přípravu emulzních gelů, které jsou následně studovány v kontextu transdermální penetrace kurkuminu in vitro.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis was to describe Pickering emulsions applicable for encapsulation of curcumin and elaborate literary search, which served as a basis for work done in the experimental part of the thesis. Initially it focused on curcumin as an active substance for applications in cosmetics or pharmacy. In the next step, cosmetic vehicles suitable for carrying lipophilic curcumin were discussed. Particular emphasis was put on Pickering emulsions stabilized with sodium caseinate and nanocrystalline cellulose. In the experimental part of the thesis, Pickering emulsions containing curcumin were prepared using the layer-by-layer technique, and were characterized by measuring the size of emulsion droplets by laser diffraction, determination of the creaming index, and visual assessment of their stability. These curcumin-containing emulsions were used for the preparation of emulsion gels, which were subsequently studied in the context of transdermal penetration of curcumin in vitro.
