Epistemology of Fact-Checking

Abstract:

Práce popisuje současný model fact-checkingu jako odvětví aplikované epistemologie. Nejprve se věnuje vymezení fact-checkingu a popisuje jeho teoretická východiska. Dále představuje metodiku fact-checkingu, epistemické charakteristiky hodnotících kritérií a specifické požadavky, které jsou kladeny na výroky veřejně činných osob. Ve stěžejní části textu je pak shrnuta kritika fact-checkingu v akademickém diskurzu, spojená s hodnocením role obsahové kontroly veřejných projevů a návrhy úprav metodiky, vedoucí ke zvýšení epistemické relevance fact-checkingu.

Abstract:

The thesis describes the current model of fact-checking as a branch of applied epistemology. First, it defines fact-checking, and describes its theoretical background. It then introduces the methodology of fact-checking, the epistemological characteristics of evaluation criteria and examines the specific requirements that are placed on the statements of public figures. The core part of the text then summarizes the critique of fact-checking in academic discourse, together with an assessment of the role of content control of publicized claims, and suggestions for modifications to the methodology leading to an increase in the epistemological relevance of fact-checking.
