"You Can Always Give Up" - The Analysis of the Movie All Is Lost

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje analýzu filmu Vše je ztraceno od režiséra J. C. Chandora. Vše je ztraceno je film, který je na jedné straně velmi zajímavým uměleckým dílem a na druhé straně výjimečným snímkem z jachtařského prostředí. Oproti běžným analýzám jsem zvolila poměrně inovativní přístup, protože se na film nedívám jen z pohledu filmové vědkyně, ale také z pozice jachtařky. Film Vše je ztraceno má parametrické vyprávění, byť se obrací i ke klasickým schématům a také dvě výrazná omezení. Zaprvé pouze jednu postavu, zadruhé jedno poměrně specifické prostředí. Tato studie mapuje, jak zmíněná omezení ovlivnila tento film. Na závěr této analýzy předkládám krátký dotazník, který ověřuje mé závěry. Respondenty jsem rozdělila do dvou skupin – na jachtaře (David Rauch a Tomáš Krejčí) a na diváky, kteří nemají žádnou osobní zkušenost s jachtingem.

Abstract:

This study analyses the movie All Is Lost directed by J. C. Chandor. All is Lost is a movie which is, on the one hand, a very interesting piece of art and, on the other hand, an extraordinary sailing movie. As opposed to more usual analysis, I have chosen a relatively innovative approach as I examine the movie not only from the point of view of a film scientist but also from the position of a sailor. All Is Lost has got parametrical narration, even though it builds on classical schemata and it is dealing with two significant restraints; only one character; and one specific environment. This study is then tracing how these restraints influenced the movie. At the end I present a short questionnaire, that is testing my conclusions. Responders are divided into two groups - sailors (David Rauch and Tomáš Krejčí) and three other spectators, which have no sailing experience.
