Media in everyday life of total institution: media practice of a children diagnostic asylum inmates

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na roli médií v každodenním životě klientů dětského diagnostického ústavu se zřetelem na charakteristiku tohoto prostředí a osobnostní vlastnosti klientů. Obecně spadá do oblasti výzkumů věnujících se roli médií v každodenním životě dospívajících dětí. Toto poměrně klasické téma je však v práci zasazeno do kontextu dětského diagnostického ústavu, totální instituce, jejíž každodennost je formována direktivně zavedenými pravidly a denním režimem. Práce je výzkumnou sondou do problematiky vzájemného vztahu totální instituce a médií; médií a jejich uživatelů, tedy klientů diagnostického ústavu; a samozřejmě také klientů diagnostického ústavu a této instituce samotné. Primárně se soustředí na integrační a desintegrační potenciál médií v tomto specifickém prostředí. Klade si otázky, jakým způsobem mohou média v dětském diagnostickém ústavu plnit kompenzační funkci chybějících sociálních vztahů, jak mohou napomáhat ke konstrukci ontologického pocitu bezpečí či jak ovlivňují sociopreferenční vztahy mezi klienty ústavu. Protože se klienti dětského diagnostického ústavu vyznačují poruchami chování, zaměřuje se tato práce také na vzájemný vztah mezi chováním klienta a mediální konzumací. Teoretická část práce podává konceptuální platformu pro následnou analýzu, která v souladu s teorií interpretuje data získaná prostřednictvím zúčastněného pozorování, hloubkových rozhovorů, sociometrického testu, analýzy deníčků a dotazníku zjišťujícího mediální kompetence.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the role of media in everyday life of children diagnostic asylum inmates with respect to the environmental characteristic and personal features of the inmates. This thesis generally deals with the area of research devoted to the role of media in everyday life of adolescents. This quite a classic theme, is implemented in the context of total institution - children's diagnostic asylum - whose everyday life is restricted by directively establishing rules and daily regime. The work is a research probe into the issue of the relationship between total institutions and the media, the media and their users – children diagnostic asylum inmates, and of course the relationship between inmates and diagnostic asylum itself. The thesis primarily focuses on integration and disintegration media's potential in this specific environment. It solves how the media in the children diagnostic asylum perform a compensatory function of the lack of social relationships, how they can help with construction of a sense of ontological security and how they affect the relationships among clients. Because the inmates in children diagnostic asylum are characterized by behavioural disorders, this work focuses on the relationship between the asocial behaviour of inmate and his media consumption. Theory part of this work provides with conceptual platform for the subsequent analysis, in accordance with the theory of interpreting the data obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews, sociometric tests, diaries analysis and the questionnaire in order to identify media competence.
