The Benefit of Jindřich Brichta on the Field of Czechoslovak Cinematographical Museummaking

Abstract:

Ve své práci jsem se zaměřil na práci a přínos Jindřicha Brichty na poli zakládání československého kinematografického muzejnictví. Brichta působil nejdříve v Technickém muzeu československém v Praze, kde v roce 1923 založil samostatné oddělení fotograficko-kinematografické. Později v roce 1948 inicioval založení samostatného Ceskoslovenského kinematografického muzea. To však bylo roku 1954 opět včleněno pod správu Technického muzea. Brichta koncipoval muzeum velmi moderně a položil základy muzejním konceptům, jež jsou využívány dodnes. Nejvíce jsem se zaměřil na období 1946-48, kdy bylo zakládáno samostatné kinematografické muzeum a byly utvářeny základní postupy. Zmapována je též historie boje o budovu dnešního Národního technického muzea na Letné tesně po válce. Ve zkratce jsou též zmíněny okolnosti zakládání dnešního Národního filmového archivu v roce 1943, na kterém se Brichta velkou měrou podílel a jehož byl od roku 1945 ředitelem.

Abstract:

In my study I focused on work and benefits of Jindřich Brichta on the field of Czechoslovak cinematographic history research and process of foundation the cinematographic mu¬seum. I made a reasearch about his participation in Czechoslo¬vak technical museum, particularly the period when he founded the department of fotography and cinematography in 1923. Later, in 1948, he also founded independent Czechoslovak museum of Cinematography in Prague. It was the biggest museum of its kind in the world. Brichta concepted the museum in rather a modern way and focused its exposition especially on prehistory of cinematography. He always tried to make the exposition ob¬jective but the communist era, which started in late 1940s, changed the open-minded museum into the storefront of bolshe¬vik propaganda. In 1954 the independent Cinematographic museum was given back under the „wings“ of National Technical Museum and became again the department of NTM only. All-in-all, in those times of Cinem. museum that was the most contributing period for cinem. history research in Czechoslovakia. During that time, the museum was donated and sup¬ported by government and got the most important technical equipments and showpieces. Also the basic concepts of museum¬making was, thanks to Jindřich Brichta, implemented and they are still used till nowadays. Brichta was a skillful man who made his dreams true and helped the development of modern Cinematographic museum. My study shows how did he manage it and how the historical back-ground effected his work.
