Abstract:

Bakalářská práce nazvaná „The notion of abstraction and Medieval art“ se věnuje anikonické/abstraktní výtvarné tvorbě, vzniklé ve středověku. Text bakalářské práce přináší souhrn informací o literatuře, která se váže k tématu. V současné době výzkum této oblasti přináší velké množství pozoruhodných poznatků, avšak postrádá delší kontinuitu, a tak i možnost srovnání většího množství publikovaných studií. Dále se práce věnuje především několika důležitým otázkám, které se k tématu váží, jako je například adekvátní užívání terminologie, především pojmu abstrakce. Další důležitý bod práce se věnuje otázce, do jaké míry mohla konkrétní středověká anikonická díla souviset s dobovým, teologicko-filozofickým uvažováním a teoriemi abstrakce. Text zmiňuje i tu okolnost, že současné přemýšlení a bádání o středověké ne zobrazivé výtvarné tvorbě nelze zcela oddělit od diskurzu, který se týká fenoménu abstraktní tvorby 20. století a současnosti. V rámci hledání odpovědi na položené otázky, práce představuje dva artefakty, skleněnou destičku s vyobrazením Krista ze San Vincenza z 9. století a miniaturu vyobrazující moment ticha ze Silos Beatus, která vznikla mezi lety 1100 -1109. Pomocí těchto dvou případových studií a také pomocí studia dostupné literatury, se práce pokouší o přiblížení charakteru středověkých anikonických/abstraktních děl. Odpověď na otázku, jestli lze formulovat přesněji místa ve kterých se potkává středověká anikonická/ abstraktní díla s projevy moderní abstrakce, může přinést až následný podrobný výzkum a srovnání obou rozsáhlých oblastí umělecké tvorby.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis entitled The notion of abstraction and Medieval art is dedicated to the examination of aniconic/abstract art created in the Middle Ages. The text of the bachelor thesis provides a summary of the literature related to the topic. The current research in this area provides a great deal of remarkable insights but lacks longer continuity and thus the possibility of comparing a larger number of published studies. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on several important issues related to the topic, such as the adequate use of terminology, especially regarding the concept of abstraction. Another important point of the thesis is devoted to the question to what extent specific medieval aniconic works could be related to the theological-philosophical thinking and theories about abstraction of the time. The text also mentions the circumstance that contemporary thinking and research on medieval non-representational art cannot be completely separated from the discourse concerning the phenomenon of abstract art in the twentieth century and today. In the search for answers to the questions posed, the thesis presents two artefacts, a glass plate depicting Christ from San Vincenzo from the 9th century and a miniature depicting a moment of silence from Silos Beatus, made between 1100 -1109. Using these two case studies, as well as a study of the available literature, the thesis attempts to characterize medieval aniconic/abstract works. The answer to the question of whether it is possible to better locate the areas where medieval aniconic/abstract works meet the manifestations of modern abstraction can only be provided by subsequent detailed research and comparison of both extensive areas of artistic creation.
