Risk and death in the contemporary Western culture: An analysis of film presentation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se bude věnovat představení problematiky smrti v dnešní spo-lečnosti a dále uměleckého a mediálního obrazu smrti ve filmech. Zaměří se na analýzu tří vybraných současných filmů západního průmyslu, které jsou divácky oblíbené, zastupují různé žánrové kategorie a zároveň zpracují s motivem smrti, ty pak využije jako datové zdroje. Právě filmy jsou média, která divákům předkládají a vyprávějí příběhy, které často odrážejí sociální realitu a mohou do procesu její konstrukce i zasahovat. Jako výzkumná metoda byla, vzhledem k zaměření a rozsahu práce, zvolena diskursivní analýza. Cílem projektu bude představit diskursivní modely smrti, prezentovaných ve vybraných filmech a také modely postojů, jakými postavy na přímé ohrožení nebo konfrontaci se smrtí reagují. Diskursivní modely smrti ve filmu totiž odrážejí modely smrti v „reálné“ společnosti, protože vztah těchto modelů je reci-proční, takže mohou do určité míry reflektovat převládající názory běžných lidí na smrt.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis is dedicated to the issue of death in today’s society and the artistic and media depiction of death in the movies. The thesis focuses on the analysis of three selected present-time movies of the western film industry, which are favourite amongst the viewers, the movies represent different genres and simultaneously operate with the motive of death. These movies serve as data sources. It is movies that bring up and narrate the stories, that often reflect social reality and may interfere with the construction of such reality. Considering the focus and the extent of this thesis, the discourse analysis was chosen as a research method. The aim of this project is to introduce the discursive models of death presented in the chosen movies as well as model of attitudes with which the characters react to a direct threat or confrontation with the death. The discursive models of death mirror models of death in the “real” society, because the relation of these models is reciprocal, thus to a certain extent they can reflect common people’s predominant opinion of death.
