Potential benefits of implementation of Carbon-Capture technologies in freight transportation

Abstract:

Otázka udržitelnosti a ochrany životního prostředí je stále více probíraným tématem v dnešní společnosti. V důsledku této debaty se Evropská unie zavázala do roku 2030 snížit množství emisí v dopravě o 90 %. Cílem této práce je vyhodnotit technologie Carbon-Capture v souvislosti s dopravním sektorem. Údajně má redukovat množství emisí o 80 %. Nicméně toto číslo neobsahuje nutnost konstrukce dodatečné infrastruktury. Práce hledá odpověď na otázku, jak velká je redukce emisí po započtení vlivu infrastruktury na území České republiky. Porovnáním vznikajících emisí v různých fázích životního cyklu bylo zjištěno, že finální redukce je ve výši 76 % a tím pádem nemají zásadní vliv na potenciál technologie. Výsledky jsou uvedeny v souvislost s finanční náročností investice při porovnání s osobními bezemisními vozidly.

Abstract:

The question of sustainability has been rising in the public sphere. As a consequence of this debate, the EU has decided to reduce transportation emissions by 90 % by 2030. The aim of this thesis is to find out if carbon-capture technology can play a role in this goal. Supposedly, the technology is able to absorb 80 % of emissions coming out of lorries. This percentage does not take the needed infrastructure into consideration. This thesis aims to answer the question of how big the reduction can be if emissions from the infrastructure are taken into consideration. By comparing the CO2 emitted in the individual stages of the lifespan of the technology, the results show that the reduction can be as high as 76 %. Therefore, the infrastructure does not have a big impact on the effectiveness of such technology. In addition to these results, the financial perspective is quantified and compared to other transportation green technology to gauge its effectiveness.
