Learning Styles of Gifted Children

Abstract:

Katarína Kalivodová: Learning styles of gifted children The themes of this diploma work are, besides the learning styles of gifted children, which are compared with learning preferences of average children of third, fourth and fifth grade in primary school: a comparison of the learning styles of girls and boys, as well as a comparison of each of the grades/years they are in.The theoretical part of this work is divided into three chapters. We define here the terms I will work with, and the manner in which I will work with them. The first chapter is dedicated to the demarcation of the terms: ‘learning’, ‘learning and cognitive styles’. In the second one we found a theoretical base for the construct of giftedness. The last chapter includes information about developmental particularities of age period, which is relevant to the examined subjects. The empiric part indicates a description of the method used, the subjects examined, the procedure of statistical analysis and the extraction of results from it, which are interpreted and finally discussed with other recent discourses. We used in our study questionaire LSI – Learning Style Inventory of authors Dunn, Dunn, Price. Questionaire consists of 71 questions which grouped into 21 variable. Our Study results are similar to foreing ones. We have found out that gifted students prefer colder enviroment, nonstandard furniture and ways of learning. They are also used to eat more than other students while they are learning, they rather learn in the morning and their parents seem to be bigger motivation for them in compare with average students. They prefer tactil and experiencial learning but they prefer auditive learning less than average students. When we compare differences between gender we find out these ones: boys prefer learning in the morning and tactil learning more than girls and noise don't disturb them. Girls need more light for learning and a teacher represents bigger motivation for them in compare with boys.

Katarína Kalivodová: Štýly učenia u nadaných detí Témou diplomovej práce sú vedľa učebných štýlov nadaných detí, ktoré komparujem s učebnými preferenciami bežných detí tretích, štvrtých a piatych tried základnej školy, aj porovnanie študijných štýlov u dievčat a chlapcov a takisto porovnanie v rámci jednotlivých ročníkov. Teoretická časť práce je rozdelená na tri kapitoly. Definujem v nej kľučové pojmy, ako s nimi v práci narábam. Prvá kapitola je venovaná vymedzeniu pojmov učenie, učebný a kognitívny štýl. V druhej pokladám teoretické zázemie pre konštrukt nadanie. Posledná kapitola obsahuje informácie o vývojových špecifikách vekového obdobia, ktorým práve žiaci prechádzajú. Empirická časť uvádza deskripciu použitej metódy, skúmanej vzorky, postupy štatistickej analýzy, upravené výstupy z nej, ktoré sú interpetované a finálne diskutované s recentnými súvzťažnými štúdiami. V našom výskume sme použili dotazník LSI – Learning Style Inventory autorov Dunn, Dunn, Price, ktorý skúma učebné preferencie. Pozostáva zo 71 otázok grupovaných do 21 premenných. Výsledky našej štúdie sa kryjú s výskumami zahraničných autorov. V štúdii sme zistili, že nadaní žiaci uprednostňujú chladnejšie prostredie, neštandardný nábytok a netradičné spôsoby učenia sa. Pri učení viac konzumujú, učia sa skôr dopoludnia a rodičia sú pre nich väčšou motiváciou ako pre bežných žiakov. Obľubujú taktilné a zážitkové učenie a menej dôrazne ako bežní žiaci preferujú auditívne učenie. Porovnanie premenných v závislosti od pohlavia vypátralo, že chlapci sa učia radšej ráno, viac ako dievčatá preferujú taktilné učenie a hluk pri učení im menej prekáža. Dievčatá potrebujú pri učení viac svetla a učiteľ pre ne predstavuje väčšiu motiváciu ako pre chlapcov.
