Abstract:

Tato práce se soustřeďuje na kořeny a vývoj kapitalistického étosu, který stále ovlivňuje moderní západní společnost, tak jak ho ztělesňuje postava Mila Minderbindera v románu Catch-22 autora Josepha Hellera. Epizody týkající se této postavy jsou uvedeny do souvislosti především s pracemi Maxe Webera, Richarda Sennetta a Patricie Carrové za účelem prozkoumání některých z aspektů typických pro členy současné západní společnosti. Nejzásadnější problematikou diskutovanou v této práci je Milova inklinace k flexibilní utilitaristické morálce a jakým způsobem Milo odráží negativní tendence současné západní kapitalistické kultury.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the origins and the development of the capitalist ethos that still influences the modern Western society, as embodied by the character Milo Minderbinder in Joseph Heller's novel Chatch-22. The episodes concerning this figure are related especially to the works of Max Weber, Richard Sennett and Patricia Carr in order to explore some of the aspects typical for a member of the contemporary Western society. The most important issue discussed in this thesis is Milo's inclination towards the flexible utilitarian morality and how Milo mirrors the negative tendencies of the present-day Western capitalist culture.
