In mirror. Deformed reflection in objects by Anish Kapoor and Jeppe Hein

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with intentional deformed mirroring in the mirror objects of contemporary artists Anisha Kapoor and Jeppe Hein. The first chapter outlines the basic terms that are inseparably related to the mirror and his deformated or distorted reflection. In addition to the terminology, this part of the thesis describe the methodology and theoretical principles that are used in the next chapters to analyze the mirror object and the perception of the viewer. The work in the next chapter brings the reader closer to the historical context of the mirror motif in painting despite historical development, which ends with artworks and experiments with the mirror of the artist of 20th century artists. In this part of the work, it is important how the artist received the mirror in its physical form, as an autonomous mirror object and in what form it gets into the gallery space. The fourth chapter describes the exhibition Space Shifters held at Hayward Gallery in London in 2018-2019. This part of the work is conceived as a complementary artistic-historical development of the west coast of America, where the art movement the Light and Space was formed and also it is a kind of imaginary entry into the main part of the work. It is because as a part of this exhibition, the atrworks of Anish Kapoor a Jeppe Hein were exhibited for the first time in one place. The following chapter describes how and which way are the reflective surfaces used in the artworks of Anish Kapoor and Jeppe Hein. The last chapter deals with the specific analytical and interpretative frameworks of the mirror objects of both artists. The aim of the master's thesis is to provide new possible category in contemporary art through a theoretical analysis of the artworks of both artists, in which a mirror object and his deformated or distorted reflection would be a unique category.

Magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá zámerným deformovaným zrkadlením v zrkadlových objektoch súčasných umelcov Anisha Kapoora a Jeppeho Heina. Prvá kapitola práce vytyčuje základné pojmy, ktoré neoddeliteľne súvisia so zrkadlom a jeho skreslenou, alebo deformovanou reflexiou. Okrem terminológie, táto časť práce načrtáva metodiku a teoretické princípy, ktoré sú použité v ďalších kapitolách pri analýze zrkadlového objektu a percepcie diváka. Práca v nasledujúcej kapitole približuje čitateľovi historický kontext motívu zrkadla v maliarstve naprieč historickým vývojom, ktorý sa končí dielami a experimentami so zrkadlom umelcov 20. storočia. V tejto časti práce je dôležité akým spôsobom bolo umelcami zrkadlo prijaté vo svojej fyzickej forme, ako autonómny zrkadlový objekt a v akej podobe sa dostáva do priestorov galérie. Štvrtá kapitola opisuje výstavu Space Shifters z roku 2018-2019, ktorá sa konala v Hayward Gallery v Londýne. Táto časť práce je ponímaná ako súvisiaci umelecko-historický vývoj západného pobrežia Ameriky, v ktorom sa formovalo umelecké hnutie Light and Space a je pomyselným vstupom do hlavnej časti práce, pretože súčasťou tejto výstavy boli prvýkrát vystavené diela na jednom mieste od Anisha Kapoora a Jeppeho Heina. Následná kapitola opisuje to, ako a akým spôsobom využívajú reflexné plochy vo svojich dielach Anish Kapoor a Jeppe Hein. Posledná kapitola sa venuje konkrétnym analytickým a interpretačným rámcom zrkadlových sôch oboch umelcov. Zámerom magisterskej diplomovej práce je prostredníctvom teoretickej analýzy diel oboch umelcov poskytnúť čitateľovi novú možnú kategóriu v súčasnom umení, v ktorej by bol zrkadlový objekt a jej skreslená, alebo deformovaná reflexia jedinečnou kategóriou.
