Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je zhodnotit funkci amerického prezidenta Lyndona Baines Johnsona v souvislosti s bojem o Afroamerická občanská práva v šedesátých letech dvacátého století a současně vyhodnotit důležitost tří hlavních občanských zákonů, které Johnson ustanovil za svého působení. Zákon o občanských právech z roku 1964, Zákon o voličských právech z roku 1965 a v neposlední řadě Zákon o spravedlivém bydlení z roku 1968 podnítili novou sociální revoluci v zemi a nesmírně přispěli v boji proti rasové diskriminaci a segregaci. Situace rasových menšin, především Afroameričanů, zaznamenala obrovský pokrok nejen v oblasti rasové rovnosti, ale také v zlepšení jejich ekonomické a politické situace za posledních padesát let. Důležitost těchto zákonů v době, kdy rasová diskriminace a segregace nabírá jiné podoby, neutichá dodnes.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to determine the role of the American President Lyndon Baines Johnson in connection with the civil rights agenda in the 1960s and to simultaneously analyze the impact of three key pieces of civil rights legislation enacted during his administration. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 caused a new social revolution and hugely contributed to the fight against racial discrimination and segregation.Racial minorities, African-Americans in particular, managed to make huge advancements, not only in the area of racial equality but also in improving their economic and political situation over the course of the last fifty years. In the time, where racial discrimination and segregation take a new form, the importance of these civil rights is even more evident.
