Aspects of Okinawan Identity

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of Okinawan identity, its changes throughout history and factors that influence it. In this thesis, Okinawan identity is examined from various points of view. The first part of the theses focuses on the history of the area that is now known as Okinawa prefecture. This part narrates the cultural and political changes that took place in Okinawa. An emphasis is put on the periods of Japanese assimilation, Second World War and American occupation of the islands, as it had a great impact on Okinawan identity. The change of identity is illustrated on the example of Ryukyuan languages. The thesis then introduces a number of theories and models of Okinawan identity, which are briefly explained and compared. In recent years, there has been a greater effort to categorize different types of Okinawan identities. In the next part, to illustrate the change of identity, the thesis offers a few examples of identity shift in the mind of people who were born in Okinawa. The last part of the theses deals with the concept of diversity of Okinawan identity, which makes defining Okinawan identity exceptionally difficult. Okinawa itself is not a homogeneous culture. There is a vast social, linguistic and cultural difference within the area. This thesis also explains the difficulty of examining identity, as each person’s own identity is very individual, personal and subjective.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska diplomová práca sa zaoberá témou okinawskej identity, faktormi ktoré ju ovplyvňujú a zmenami, ktorými prešla. V práci je na okinawskú identitu nahliadané z niekoľkých pohľadov. Prvá časť práce sa zaoberá dejinami územia, ktoré dnes poznáme ako japonskú prefektúru Okinawa. Je tu popísaný historický vývoj a politické a kultúrne zmeny od obdobia samostatného kráľovstva po súčasnosť. Dôraz je kladený na obdobia asimilácie, druhej svetovej vojny a americkej okupácie, ktoré mali veľký vplyv na zmenu a formovanie okinawskej identity. Premena okinawskej identity je ilustrovaná na príklade rjúkjúskych jazykov. Práca sa ďalej venuje niekoľkým teóriám a modelom okinawskej identity, ktoré sú v krátkosti vysvetlené a porovnané. V tejto časti práce sú predstavené snahy kategorizovať rôzne typy okinawskej identity. Ďalej sú v práci uvedené konkrétne príklady posunu identity v príbehoch jednotlivcov pochádzajúcich z Okinawy. Práca sa tiež zaoberá myšlienkou diverzity okinawskej identity, ktorá dokazuje, že definovať pojem „okinawská identita“ je veľmi náročné. Dôvodom je fakt, že Okinawa nie je jednotná homogénna kultúra ale nachádza sa tu mnoho miestnych, kultúrnych a jazykových odlišností. Práca vysvetľuje náročnosť skúmania identity, keďže identita každého jedinca je individuálna, subjektívna a osobná.
