Writings of Petr Chelčický from the Perspective of “Historicization of the Secularization Debate”

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá možností využití pojmů sekularizačních teorií tzv. starého paradigmatu (byrokratizace, racionalizace, diferenciace, legitimizace, individualismus, etické zdůvodnění práce) a jejich vzájemných vztahů upřesněných myšlenkami Maxe Webera k teoreticky obohacené interpretaci díla středověkého myslitele Petra Chelčického. Navazuje tak na výzkumný program „historizace sekularizační debaty“ P. Gorskiho – tedy empirizaci historických předpokladů teorií sekularizace. Výsledky práce, které tento přístup přinesl, ukazují, že Chelčický byl víc než jen nadčasový sociolog nebo naopak pouze „arcikritik“, ale také jak jednotlivé prvky v Chelčického myšlení (vztah církve a světské moci, náboženská legitimizace světské moci, vztah jednotlivce ke světské moci, vztah jednotlivce a jeho spásy, racionalizační tendence) spolu souvisí, jak se vzájemně ovlivňují a jaký mají následný dopad na formování jednotlivce i společnosti. Užití společenskovědních teorií k interpretaci historických pramenů nám nabízí plastičtější pohled jak na dílo Petra Chelčického, tak i na procesy, o kterých tyto teorie hovoří.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the possibilities of using secularization theories concepts of the called “old paradigm”, such as byrocratization, rationalization, differentiation, legitimization, individualism, ethical reasoning of work, as well as their interrelations elaborated by Max Weber’s theories in order to understand the work of the medieval thinker Petr Chelčický. The thesis thus relates to the research program of the “historization of the secularization debate“ put forward by P. Gorski, which aims to empirical verification of historical assumptions of the theories of secularization. The thesis shows that Chelčický was more than just a progressive sociologist or simply „arch-critic“, and deepens the understanding of the interrelations of various elements in Chelčický’s thoughts (relationship between Church and secular power, religious legitimization of secular power, relationship of individual to secular power, relationship of individual and his salvation, rationalization) as well as their consequent impact on the formation of both individual and society. Using sociological theories to interpret historical sources offers more nuanced view on the work of Peter Chelčický as well as on the processes the theories of secularization are dealing with.
