Aspects of Turn-Taking in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá pojmem turn-taking (střídaní mluvčích) a jeho využitím moderátorem populárního amerického talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, který vytváří dojem přátelské konverzace v rozhovoru se svými hosty ve studiu před publikem. Za účelem ilustrace konkrétních aspektů turn-takingu, z videí dostupných na YouTube bylo vybráno deset úryvků. Vybrané fragmenty byly transkribované a analyzovány metodou konverzační analýzy. Studie ukazuje, že moderátor kombinuje různé aspekty turn-takingu, například sekvence otázek a odpovědí, formulace, strategie alokace pořadí způsobem, který není příznačný pro institucionalizovaný diskurz. Tím moderátor uvolňuje charakter rozhovoru, což přizpůsobí k tomu, že se tento program stává více podobný neformální konverzaci než jazyku zpravodajství. Výsledky provedené analýzy jsou otevřené interpretací, ale ukazují potenciál turn-takingu jako jednoho z primárních prostředků vedení hovoru a distribuce kontroly mezi mluvčími v rámci konverzace.

Abstract:

The present thesis explores the use of turn-taking by the host of the popular American talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, who creates an impression of a friendly conversation while interviewing his guests in front of a live audience. Ten excerpts were chosen from the interview clips available on YouTube to illustrate the particular aspects of turn-taking employed by the host. Selected fragments were tran-scribed and analyzed using the method of conversation analysis. The study shows that the host combines internal resources of turn-taking, such as the question-answer se-quences, formulations, turn allocation strategies, etc. in a way that is not generally typical of institutionalized discourse. This allows for a more relaxed nature of talk and accounts for the fact that the show is more similar to casual conversation rather than a news interview. Though open to interpretations, the findings indicate the po-tential of turn-taking as one of the primary means of shaping the conversation and distributing the power between the speakers.
