Well-being and individual conceptions of social change among civically engaged young people

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje způsobům a návaznostem vztahu mezi well-beingem a individuálními pojetími sociální změny u občansky angažovaných mladých lidí v queer otázkách. Jako hlavní paradigmatické zakotvení práce byla zvolena (kritická) komunitní psychologie, která pracuje se sociálním kontextem well-beingu. Na základě studia teoretické literatury si práce klade dvě výzkumné otázky: „Skrze jaká témata je na sebe navázán well-being a individuálního pojetí sociální změny u občansky angažovaných mladých lidí v queer otázkách?“ a „Jaká konkrétní pojetí sociální změny má mé respondentstvo a jak se vážou k jejich prožívanému well-beingu?“. Data ze 7 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů byla podrobena tematické analýze (Braun & Clarke, 2006) za pomoci programu MAXQDA. Z analýzy vzešlo 10 nosných témat, která se objevovala v datech a popisují vztah individuálního pojetí sociální změny a well-beingu. Dále bylo identifikováno a popsáno 5 různých percepcí aktuálního stavu světa a dalších 9 cílů občanské angažovanosti jakožto ústředních částí individuálního pojetí sociální změny a u všech byl zkoumán jejich potenciál motivovanosti, prožívaná frustrace, výběr způsobu občanské angažovanosti a výsledný pociťovaný well-being. Za hlavní zjištění považuji, že mé respondentsvo bere jako důležitou součást angažovanosti tvorbu komunit a někdy je to i ústředním cílem. Komunita se tak i v souladu s mnohými dřívějšími výzkumy (např. Müller-Bachmann et al., 2023) ukazuje jako naprosto rozhodující element pociťovaného well-beingu. To, co je ale přínosem této práce, je ukázání toho, jakými způsoby je tvorba komunit navázána na percepce aktuálního světa a vytyčené cíle vlastní občanské angažovanosti.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the ways and continuities of the relationship between well-being and individual conceptions of social change in civically engaged young people on queer issues. (Critical) Community Psychology, which works with the social context of well-being, was chosen as the main paradigmatic grounding of the thesis. Based on a study of the theoretical literature, the thesis asks two research questions: "Through what themes are the relationships of well-being and individual conceptions of social change linked in civically engaged young people in queer issues?" and "What are the specific conceptions of social change held by my respondents and how do they relate to their experienced well-being?" Data from the 7 semi-structured interviews were subjected to thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) using MAXQDA software. The analysis yielded 10 supporting themes that emerged in the data describing the relationship between individual conceptions of social change and well-being. In addition, 5 different perceptions of the current state of the world and a further 9 civic engagement goals were identified and described as central components of individual conceptions of social change, and for all of them, their potential for motivation, experienced frustration, choice of civic engagement mode, and resulting felt well-being were examined. I consider the main finding to be that my respondents regard community building to be an important part of engagement and sometimes a central goal. Thus, and in line with much previous research (eg. Müller-Bachmann et al., 2023), community emerges as an absolutely critical element of well-being. However, what this thesis contributes is showing the ways in which community formation is tied to perceptions of the actual world and the stated goals of one's own civic engagement.
