Effect of forest structure on capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) occurrence in the mountain spruce forest in Šumava Mts.

Abstract:

Horské smrčiny na Šumavě jsou domovem mnoha vzácných a ohrožených druhů. Mezi jinými, hostí také poslední životaschopnou populaci tetřeva hlušce (Tetrao urogallus) v České republice. Tyto lesy zaznamenaly významné změny struktury pod vlivem přírodních disturbancí. Vztah mezi aktuální strukturou lesa po přírodních disturbancích a výskytem tetřeva hlušce nebyl doposud podrobně zkoumán. Proto bylo hlavním cílem této práce popsat a porovnat strukturu lesa na plochách s výskytem a bez výskytu tetřeva hlušce v horských smrčinách na Šumavě. Celkem bylo založeno 49 trvalých výzkumných ploch ve čtyřech studijních oblastech. Na každé ploše byla sbírána data popisující strukturu lesa (dřevinné složení, regenerace, mrtvé dřevo, korunový zápoj…) a také data o presenci a absenci tetřeva hlušce. Data z terénu byla zpracována a vyhodnocena pomocí popisné statistiky. Tetřev preferoval plochy po přírodních disturbancích, v různých stádiích vývoje. Podmínkou pro výskyt byl nižší, přerušovaný korunový zápoj. Tetřev využíval plochy s bohatým výskytem mrtvého dřeva. Zastoupením na těchto plochách jednoznačně dominoval smrk ztepilý (Picea abies). Tetřev byl nalezen pouze na plochách s výskytem brusnice borůvky (Vaccinium myrtillus). Průměrná výška keříků brusnice borůvky byla 30 cm. Tato zjištění boří všeobecné představy, že tetřev hlušec vyhledává jenom staré, jehličnaté lesy. Naše výsledky ukazují, že tetřev hlušec využívá i mladé lesy po silných narušeních ponechaných přirozenému vývoji. Celkově je možné tvrdit, že struktura lesa má zásadní vliv na výskyt tetřeva hlušce.

Abstract:

The mountain spruce forests in the Šumava Mts. are home to many rare and endangered species. Among others, it also hosts the last viable population of capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) in the Czech Republic. These forests went through significant structural changes under the influence of natural disturbances. However, the relationship between the recent forest structure after severe natural disturbances, and the occurrence of capercaillie has not been studied in detail. Hence, the main objective of this work was to describe and compare the forest structure in study plots with and without occurrence of capercaillie in mountain spruce forests in the Šumava Mts. In total, 49 permanent study plots were established in four study areas. Data describing the forest structure (eg. tree composition, regeneration, dead wood, canopy closure) were collected on each plot, as well as presence and absence data of the capercaillie. Field data were processed and evaluated using descriptive statistics. The capercaillie preferred study plots in different developmental phases following the natural disturbances. Capercaillie presence signs were found in plots with lower canopy closure, rich occurrence of standing and lying dead wood and high bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) cover. The average height of the bilberry in the plots with capercaillie signs was 30 cm. Norway spruce (Picea abies) clearly dominated the area. These findings are in contradiction to the general understanding of capercaillie as a species associated with old coniferous forests. Our results show that capercaillie also use young forests after severe disturbances left to natural development. In general, forest structure had a significant impact on the occurrence of the capercaillie.
