The influence of communication medium on group identification in the context of videoconferencing

Abstract:

Táto práca je zameraná na skupinovú komunikáciu sprostredkovanú videokonferenciou. Je hľadaním odpovede na otázku, aké zmeny vo vnímaní skupinovej identity priateľov môže spôsobiť zmena komunikačného kanálu. Dvomi konkrétnymi porovnávanými prostrediami bolo tzv. štandardné videokonferenčné prostredie a GColl, špecializované videokonferenčné prostredie podporujúce spoluprácu vzdialených skupín. Účastníkmi výskumu boli skupiny priateľov, pretože sa u nich predpokladala už existujúca skupinová identita. Členovia každej skupiny boli náhodne rozdelení do dvoch podskupín, ktoré komunikovali a hrali hru založenú na sociálnej dileme prostredníctvom jedného zo spomenutých prostredí. Hlavným predpokladom bolo, že pôvodná skupina bude vnímaná jej členmi menej celistvo pri použití štandardného prostredia než pri použití GCollu. Rozdiely sa očakávali predovšetkým u členov skupiny, ktorí boli vzdialení. Ako ukazateľ tejto vnímanej identity boli použité transformácie matice sociálnej dilemy. Výsledky ukázali rozdiely medzi prostrediami, avšak v neočakávanom smere: vnímanie skupinovej identity priateľov sa líšilo medzi komunikačnými prostrediami, avšak ako viac celistvú hodnotili skupinovú identitu osoby, ktoré použili štandardné prostredie. V termínoch transformácií to znamená, že hra založená na sociálnej dileme bola hráčmi transformovaná menej pri použití GCollu než pri použití štandardného prostredia, čo nie je v súlade s hypotézami. Zdá sa, že fakt, že skupiny boli zostavené z priateľov mohol byť dôležitým vo vzťahu k týmto nepredvídaným výsledkom. Za ďalší faktor, ktorý by mohol vysvetliť tieto rozdiely, je považovaná sociálna hodnotová orientácia členov skupiny, ktorá nebola v experimentálnej a kontrolnej skupine rozvrstvená rovnomerne. To mohlo spôsobiť, že členovia skupiny transformovali hru menej pri použití GCollu, čo znamená, že preferovali viac svoj osobný zisk, ako rovnosť ziskov všetkých členov alebo vzájomnú spoluprácu.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the group communication mediated through the videoconference. It is trying to find the answer to the question, what changes in perceived group identity of friends could be caused by the change of the communication channel. In particular, the standard videoconferencing environment is compared with GColl, the specialized videoconferencing system supporting group-to-group collaboration. Groups of friends were chosen as a sample because the shared group identity was presumed to exist in such groups. Their members were divided into two subgroups that communicated and played the social dilemma game either through GColl or the standard environment. The main suggestion was that the original group will be perceived by its members as single cohesive unit more in GColl condition than in standard environment. Differences were expected particularly between players who were spatially remote and who were collocated (sharing the same room). The matrix transformations of the social dilemma game were chosen as the indicator of the perception of the group identity. The results indicate the differences in the unexpected way: the perception of the original group of friends did differ between these two environments but the group identity seemed to be perceived as more cohesive in standard environment than in GColl. In terms of matrix transformations it means that the game was transformed less in GColl than in standard environment which is not consistent with my hypotheses. The fact that the group was compound of friends could have caused these unexpected results. Furthermore, the social value orientation that was assessed by the questionnaire, was not distributed in experimental and control groups equally that could also be the explanation of the fact, that in GColl condition participants preferred rather their own profit that the welfare of the group and that they were less willing to cooperation in GColl condition than in standard videoconferencing environment condition (the transformation was low).
