Abstract:

Disertace pojednává o třech tématech z oblasti výzkumu materiálů vykazujících katodoluminiscenci (CL). První téma se primárně věnuje aplikačnímu výzkumu CL účinnosti scintilátoru při různých energiích dopadajících elektronů. Pro tento účel byly vybrány scintilátory Y3Al5O12:Ce, YAlO3:Ce, CRY018 a nejnověji vyvinutý Gd3Al2.3Ga2.7O12:Ce. Pro zvýšení vodivosti scintilátorů byly vybrány krycí vrstvy Al, Sc, Ni a oxidu india a cínu (ITO). Ze studie vrstev vyplynulo, že elektrony o energii ≥ 5keV je nejlepší detekovat scintilátorem pokrytým hliníkovou vrstvou 25 – 50 nm. Pro menší energie ≥ 0.8 keV byla nejlepší volbou ITO vrstva o tloušťce 4 nm. Pro energie elektronů menší než 0.8 keV je ve srovnání studovaných vrstev nejvýhodnější scintilátor vůbec nepokrývat. Ve studii nepokrytých scintilátorů excelovaly v detekci pomalých elektronů Y3Al5O12:Ce a Gd3Al2.3Ga2.7O12:Ce. Tyto scintilátory s výše zmíněnými parametry krycí vrstvy jsou tudíž perspektivní pro detekci pomalých elektronů. Druhé téma bylo zaměřeno na studium optické absorpce, CL a termoluminiscence (TSL) Lu3Al5O12:Ce,Mg (LuAG:Ce,Mg) and (Lu0.25Gd0.74)3(Ga2.48Al2.52)O12:Ce,Mg (LuGAGG:Ce,Mg) monokrystalických vrstev (SCF). Studiem těchto jevů byl analyzován vliv Mg-dopování, respektive koncentračního poměru Mg ku Ce na CL spektra a CL doznívání. Ve vrstvách s vysokou koncentrací Mg byla ukázána kritická role stabilních Ce4+ center na CL. Ačkoliv se Mg dopováním CL účinnost poněkud snížila, časové charakteristiky se drasticky zlepšily. Scintilační doba doznívání nejvíce dopovaného vzorku činila pouze 4.2 ns a dosvit byl pouze 0.015 % v době 500 ns po ukončení excitace. Tyto výsledky předurčují LuAG:Ce,Mg a LuGAGG:Ce,Mg SCF k použití v zařízeních pracujících s elektronovým svazkem, kde je kriticky důležitá obzvláště rychlá odezva scintilátoru. Třetím tématem byla charakterizace a vysvětlení mechanismu CL v LuAG SCF s Pr, Sc, a Ga dopanty (LuAG:Pr,Sc,Ga). Výsledky ukázaly, že nízká Sc dotace mírně zvyšuje CL účinnost blízké UV emise, ale vede ke zpomalení doznívání CL. Bylo ukázáno, že z pastí vytvořených Sc ionty dochází k tunelování elektronu k blízkému luminiscenčnímu centru. Při vyšší teplotě tunelování zaniká, ale zvýrazňuje se zpožděná rekombinace vzniklá opakovaným zachycením elektronu na pastech. Ga dopování vede ke zvýšení CL účinnosti LuAG:Pr,Sc SCFs a potlačuje efekt pastí. Z těchto výsledků vyplývá vysoký potenciál LuAG:Pr,Sc,Ga SCFs ve spektrálně optimalizovaných scintilačních detektorech pro rastrovací elektronovou mikroskopii a v detektorech s vysokým prostorovým rozlišením pro zobrazování.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with three topics in the field of research on materials exhibiting cathodoluminescence (CL). The first topic is primarily devoted to the application research on the CL efficiency of a scintillator at various energies of incident electrons. Scintillators of Y3Al5O12:Ce, YAlO3:Ce, CRY018 and the most recently developed Gd3Al2.3Ga2.7O12:Ce were selected for this purpose. Al, Sc, Ni and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) were selected as conductive coatings for the scintillators. The study of the coatings showed that electrons with an energy ≥ 5 keV are best detected by a scintillator covered with an Al layer of 25–50 nm. For smaller energies up to 0.8 keV, a 4 nm thin ITO layer was the best choice. For electron energies less than 0.8 keV, it is most advantageous not to cover the scintillator at all in comparison with the studied coatings. In a study of uncoated scintillators, Y3Al5O12:Ce and Gd3Al2.3Ga2.7O12:Ce excelled in slow electron detection. These scintillators with the above-mentioned coating parameters are therefore promising for the detection of slow electrons. The second topic was focused on the study of optical absorption and CL of Lu3Al5O12:Ce,Mg (LuAG:Ce,Mg) and (Lu0.25Gd0.74)3(Ga2.48Al2.52)O12:Ce,Mg (LuGAGG:Ce,Mg) single-crystalline films (SCFs). Using this approach, the influence of the Mg-to-Ce concentration ratio on the CL spectra and the CL decay is analyzed. The crucial role of stable Ce4+ centers in CL is shown in Mg-rich film studies. Although the CL intensity is somewhat reduced, drastic improvements in timing performance are demonstrated, including the scintillation decay time as low as 4.2 ns and the afterglow as low as 0.015% at 500 ns after the e-beam excitation cutoff. These results predetermine the utilization of the LuAG:Ce,Mg and LuGAGG:Ce,Mg SCFs in e-beam detection systems, where especially fast scintillator response is crucial. The third topic was the study of CL mechanism of LuAG:Pr films with Sc, and Ga substitution (LuAG:Pr,Sc,Ga). Low Sc doping slightly increased the CL efficiency of near UV emission, but created defects causing a slowdown in CL decay. An electron tunneling from traps formed by Sc ions to a nearby luminescence center was observed. At higher temperatures, the tunneling disappeared, but the electron retrapping effect occurred. Ga doping significantly increased the CL efficiency of the LuAG:Pr,Sc SCFs and suppressed the trap effects. These results indicate high potential of the LuAG:Pr,Sc,Ga SCFs in spectrally optimized scintillation detectors for scanning electron microscopy and in high spatial resolution detectors for imaging.
