Eye-tracking study – comparison of booking websites

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou výzkumné metody eye-tracking, která zaznamenává pohyby očí po obrazovce. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do tří částí, teoretické, analytické a návrhové. Teoretická část představuje na základě zahraniční literatury samotnou výzkumnou metodu eye-tracking, popisuje její techniky a metodiku a poukazuje na možnosti jejího využití ve výzkumu uživatelského chování, mimo jiné v oblasti hotelových rezervačních portálů. Dále přibližuje problematiku internetových rezervačních portálů jako takovou a seznamuje čtenáře s příslušnou terminologií. Analytická část zpracovává data z praktického výzkumu za pomoci metody eye-tracking, zaměřeného na interakci s internetovými rezervačními portály. Popisuje a vyhodnocuje získaná eye-trackingová videa a určuje, kam, jak dlouho a v jakém pořadí se lidé při používání rezervačních portálů očima zaměřují. Návrhová část využívá zpracovaná data z části analytické, porovnává rezervační portály Booking.com a HRS z uživatelského hlediska a pro tyto vybrané rezervační portály navrhuje dílčí změny. Jednotlivá doporučení vyplývající z analýzy a srovnání uživatelské zkušenosti se týkají konkrétně uspořádání stránek tak, aby byly přehlednější a intuitivnější a jednodušeji ovladatelné.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis explores eye-tracking, a research method based on the tracking of eye movements on the computer screen. The thesis is divided into three parts: theory, analysis and suggestion. The theoretical part, based on international scholarship, introduces the eye-tracking research method itself, describes its techniques and methodology, and indicates its possibilities in the research of user behavior, for instance as regards hotel reservation systems. It also explains internet reservations systems in more general terms and familiarizes the reader with relevant terminology. The analytical part presents processed data from practical research conducted with the help of eye-tracking and focused on human interaction with internet reservation systems. It describes and interprets eye-tracking recordings and determines where,how long and in which order people focus their eyes while using reservation websites. The “suggestion” part utilizes processed data from the analytical part, compares two reservation systems, Booking.com and HRS, from users' perspective, and suggests partial changes to these two reservation systems. Individual suggestions, following from the analysis and from the comparison of user experiences, address specifically the layout of the websites with the aim of improving spatial arrangement and ease of use, and of making the interface more intuitive.
