Psychological Aspects of Unemployment: Learned Helplessness vs. Character Strengths

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je prověření souvislostí mezi nezaměstnaností, naučenou bezmocností, respektive bezmocným vysvětlujícím stylem a silnými stránkami charakteru. Naučená bezmocnost je stav, který vzniká na základě vystavení jedince nekontrolovatelným podnětům, kdy se tento naučí, že jeho jednání nemá žádný vliv na výslednou situaci. Jde o závažný stav, pro nějž je charakteristický motivační, kognitivní a emoční deficit. Indikátorem naučené bezmocnosti a podkladem pro rozvoj jejích symptomů je bezmocný vysvětlující styl, charakteristický přisuzováním vlastnímu neúspěchu stabilní, univerzální a vnitřní příčiny a naopak úspěchu příčiny nestabilní, specifické a vnější. V práci je představen předpoklad protektivního vlivu pozitivních osobnostních charakteristik, konkrétně silných stránek charakteru, které mohou jedince chránit proti rozvoji bezmocného vysvětlujícího stylu. V rámci empirické části je testován výzkumný model vzájemných vztahů mezi nezaměstnaností, bezmocným vysvětlujícím stylem a silnými stránkami charakteru na vzorku 140 nezaměstnaných. V závěru práce jsou diskutována výzkumná zjištění, která se dotýkají signifikantního negativního vztahu mezi vybranými silnými stránkami a bezmocným vysvětlujícím stylem. Součástí práce jsou také aplikační možnosti výsledků výzkumu a související doporučení pro praxi.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is verification of the relationship between unemployment and learned helplessness, or rather helpless explanatory style and character strengths. Learned helplessness expresses a state of an individual who learns that his/her acting can´t influence the outcome. It´s a serious state, which is typical for motivational, cognitive and emotional deficits. The helpless explanatory style is an indicator of learned helplessness and the basis for development of learned helplessness symptoms. The helpless explanatory style is characterized by attributing stable, universal and internal causes to own unsuccess and by attributing unstable, specific and external causes to own success. The thesis introduces the assumption of protective influence of positive personal traits, especially character strengths, that can protect an individual from helpless explanatory style. The empirical part of the thesis verifies the research model of relationship between unemployment, helpless explanatory style and character strengths with unemployed individuals (n = 140). Finally, the findings are discussed, related to significant negative relationship between chosen character strengths and helpless explanatory style. Part of the thesis are application possiblities of the results and recommendations for practical use.
