The fate of monuments from Jewish communities and associations during the years 1938 - 1945 (Examples from the region of Liberec)

Abstract:

Cílem práce je porovnat osudy majetku židovských náboženských obcí a organizací na území anektovaném v říjnu 1938 s vývojem na území pozdějšího protektorátu Čechy a Morava. Práce sleduje tento problém na příkladu komunit, které se nacházely na území dnešního Libereckého kraje, konkrétně v Liberci, Jablonci nad Nisou, Turnově a České Lípě, přičemž Turnov spadal do protektorátu, ostatní do oblasti anektovaného pohraničí. První část seznamuje se vznikem a vývojem židovských organizací, tj. židovských náboženských obcí a spolků. Další část se věnuje osudu komunit v Sudetech v roce 1938 a křišťálové noci, která je zasáhla. Následnou likvidaci, právní i finanční, prováděl úřad komisaře pro organizace. 5. kapitola se věnuje situaci židovských organizací za II. republiky a v protektorátu, zejm. v náboženské obci v Turnově, kam se přemístila větší skupina jabloneckých Židů. Závěrečná kapitola potom sleduje cesty, jimiž se zachovaly památky ze sledovaných lokalit.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare the destiny of the property of Jewish communities and associations in the territory of Czech border area annexed in October 1938 with the development of events in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The thesis addresses this problem using the example of communities that were in the present territory of the Liberec Region, namely in Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Turnov and Česká Lípa, where only Turnov was in the territory of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and others were subjected to the government of the annexed territory. The first part of the paper introduces the origins and development of Jewish organizations, i.e. Jewish communities and associations. Next part deals with the destiny of communities in the Sudetenland in 1938 and during the Night of broken Glass. Subsequent liquidation, both legal and financial, of organizations was carried out by the Authority of Stillhaltekommissar. Chapter 5 addresses the situation of Jewish organizations in the 2nd Republic and later in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, especially of the Jewish community in Turnov, to which a larger group of Jews from Jablonec n/N relocated. The final chapter then follows the paths of preserved documents and liturgical objects from the monitored sites.
