Perspective taking in interacion with people with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to focus on perspective taking while in contact with person with ASD. The participant were 68 university students majoring in education. In accordance with Acts of social perspective taking method, respondents read two stories describing situation in which child with ASD was involved. First, we asked the participants what would they recommend to the teacher who was in the class during the incident. The next questions focused on the feelings, beliefs and motivation of child with ASD and other people who were involved. In the first study, the ability to take perspective was defined as a direct articulation of this perspective. In comparison with questions that directly asked to take the perspective of child with ASD, , the parcipants showed lower ability to take the perspective in their recommendations (Z=-6,31, p=0,00). However, Study 2 showed that the ability to take perspective is much more complicated proces that should not be reduced to only focusing of articulation of perspective. When directly asked, the participants showed higher ability to articulate the perspective of child with ASD than the ability to articulate perspective of classmates (Z=-3,30, p<0,025) and teacher (Z=-3,41, p<0,025). However, Study 2 showed that while taking perspective, lots of respondents described the behaviour of child with ASD as his/her ritual and therefore did not try to make an insigh into real motivation. Analysis did not confirm our hypothesis that people who are educated in ASD have also better ability to take a perspective of a child with ASD and there was also no significant correlation of perspective taking of child with ASD and need for cognitive closure. perspective taking, autism spectrum disorder, empathy, cognitive empathy, integrative education, need for cognitive closure

Abstract:

Cieľom štúdie bolo preskúmať problematiku zaujímania perspektívy v prípade, že sa jedná o kontakt s človekom s PAS. Ako výskumnú skupinu sme zvolili 68 študentov pedagogiky. Respondentom sme v súľade s metódou Acts of social perspective taking poskytli popis dvoch problematických situácií, ktoré sa týkali žiaka s PAS. Následne mali odpovedať na to, čo by učiteľke v danej situácii doporučili. Ďalšie otázky smerovali priamo k tomu, čo osoba s PAS a ostatní spolužiaci a učiteľka v danej chvíli prežívajú. V prvom výskume bola schopnosť zaujať perspektívu definovaná ako (ne)prítomnosť priameho popisu tejto perspektívy. Respondenti preukázali signifikantne nižšiu schopnosť zaujať perspektívu v prípade, že mali navrhnúť odporúčanie ako v prípade, že o to boli explicitne požiadaný (Z=-6,31, p=0,00). Výskum 2 však ukázal, že zaujímanie perspektívy je v prípade riešenia určitej situácie oveľa komplikovanejší proces, ktorý sa nedá redukovať len na to, či respondent uviedol popis prežívania dieťaťa s PAS alebo nie. V prípade, že o to boli priamo požiadaní, respondenti preukázali signifikantne viac popisov u osoby s PAS ako u spolužiakov (Z=-3,30, p<0,025) či učiteľky (Z=-3,41, p<0,025). Analýza vo výskume č. 2 však ukázala, že respondenti častokrát pripisujú správanie žiaka s PAS naučeným rituálom a zvykom a nepredpokladajú, že toto správanie môže mať inú, hlbšiu motiváciu. Pozitívny vplyv vzdelanosti s skúseností na schopnosť zaujať perspektívu žiaka s PAS preukázaný nebol. Takisto nebola zistená významnejšia súvislost schopnosti zaujať perspektívu žiaka s PAS s potrebou kognitívneho uzatvorenia.
