Effect of the configuration of automatic methods for brain morphometry on the resulting detection of morphological abnormalities

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje morfometrickým metodám založených na analýze MR obrazů (obraz pořízený zobrazováním magnetickou resonancí), které se zkoumají z hlediska jejich potencionálního využití k počítačové podpoře diagnostiky neuropsychiatrických poruch. Cílem diplomové práce je nepřímé porovnání těchto dvou běžně používaných morfometrických metod, morfometrie založené na voxelech (VBM) a morfometrie založené na deformacích (DBM). Kvantitativní i kvalitativní anylýza obou metod byla provedena na MR reálných obrazech z klinické praxe. Srovnání výsledků morfometických metod za různých konfigurací bylo prováděno pomocí metriky Jaccardova koeficientu a polohové metriky vzdálenosti centroidů odhalených shluků. Sočástí praktické části byla také simulace lokálních volumetrických změn pomocí prostorové interpolace. Výsledky testování potvrdily citlivost morfometrických metod na konfiguraci. Zdrojový kód praktické části práce, implementovaný v programovacím prostředí MATLAB, je součástí přiloženého DVD.

Abstract:

Thesis deals with two methods of automated morphometry that are based on the analysis of magnetic resonance images, which are studied with respect to their potential application in the computer support of diagnostics of neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of this diploma thesis is an indirect comparison of these two commonly used morphometric methods – voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and deformation-based morphometry (DBM). Both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the two mentioned methods was performed on magnetic resonance images from real clinical practice. The comparison of results of morphometric methods under diverse configurations was made via the Jaccard index and the metric for centroids’ distances of discovered clusters. Another part of the thesis is a simulation of local volumetric changes using spatial interpolation. Results achieved through the testing confirmed the sensitivity of morphometric methods to the configuration settings. The source code of the practical part of the work, implemented in the programming environment of MATLAB, is included in the enclosed DVD.
