Sports diplomacy as part of Canada's foreign policy

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá propojením sportu, mezinárodních vztahů a zahraniční politiky v Kanadě. Prozkoumáním vládních dokumentů jsou identifikovány dva způsoby, jakými Kanada využívá sport jako nástroj zahraniční politiky. Prvním jsou sportovci, kteří působí jako velvyslanci a propagátoři země, druhým je pořádání sportovních akcí, které zas předvádí zemi národním a mezinárodním divákům a podporuje kulturu sportu. Na základě případové studie se třemi příklady je zjišťováno, jak sport a sportovní diplomacie ovlivnily image tohoto státu. Příklady případové studie jsou vybrány na základě podrobné rešerše literatury, kdy bylo vyhodnoceno, že s Kanadou je spojována především hokejová diplomacie, olympismus a také Commonwealth hry jako speciální příklad členské země Commonwealthu. I přes různorodost událostí lze konstatovat, že všechny pořádané sportovní akce měly dopad na utváření image Kanady, ať už pozitivní či negativní sportovní diplomacií, a přispěly k utváření vztahů mezi státy.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the connection of sport, international relations and foreign policy in Canada. Studying of government documents identifies two ways that Canada uses sport as a foreign policy instrument. The first is the use of athletes who act as ambassadors and promoters of the country, the second is the organization of sport events, which shows the country to national and international audience and supports the sport culture. Based on a case study with three examples, it is examined how sport and sport diplomacy have influenced the image of this state. Examples of a case study are selected on the basis of a detailed literature review, where it is assessed that Canada is primarily associated with ice hockey diplomacy, olympism and also Commonwealth Games as a special example of a Commonwealth member country. Despite the diversity of events, it is possible to claim that all sporting events have had an impact on the shape of Canada's image, whether positive or negative sport diplomacy, and have contributed to shaping relations between states.
