The Establishment of Divine Order in Psalms Compared with Ugaritic Texts

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje hebrejský kosmogonický mýtus dochovaný v poetických narážkách biblických žalmů a staví jej vedle jeho kněžského zpracování v prvních kapitolách Genesis. Kromě motivu stvoření slovem známého s Genesis zaujímá v žalmech významné místo také obraz Božího řádu nastoleného Hospodinovým zápasem se silami chaosu, představovanými především vodstvem primordiálních propastných tůní. Božský zápas je rovněž dominantou ugaritského kosmogonického mýtu: v něm je řád světa nastolen a umožněn teprve vítězstvím boha bouře a deště Baala nad protivníky Jamem a Mótem. Ze srovnání hebrejského a ugaritského mýtu je patrná příbuznost biblických a ugaritských kosmogonických představ: ugaritský i hebrejský kosmos se vyznačují obdobnou strukturou, biblický stvořitel světa Hospodin sdílí řadu rysů s hlavními božstvy ugaritského panteonu Elem a Baalem. V obou mýtech je nastolení řádu umožněno zdoláním sil chaosu. V žalmech však je již zároveň patrné oslabování některých motivů ve prospěch obrazu Hospodina "převyšujícího všechny bohy".

Abstract:

The essay analyses the Hebrew cosmogonic myth preserved in the poetical allusions of biblical psamls and compares it with its priestly version in the opening chapters of Genesis. In addition to the theme of creation through the Yahweh´s command we can find in psalms the picturisation of Divine order established through the Yahweh´s battle with chaos represented especially by the primordial waters. God´s battle dominates also in the Ugaritic creation myth: Its cosmic order is founded and sustained only by means of victory of Baal, the battlesome god of storm and rain, over Yam and Mot. The comparison of the Hebrew and Ugaritic creation myths shows the affinity of biblical and Ugaritic cosmogonies: Ugaritic and Habrew cosmos have similar structures, biblical Creator shares many features with leading gods of the Ugaritic pantheon Baal and El, both in Hebrew and Ugaritic myth cosmos is established by defeating the chaos. On the other hand we can see weakening and reduction of some motives in biblical psalms on behalf of Yahweh "standing over all gods".
