Henry Sidgwick and the Problem of Quantification in Ethics

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na problém kvantifikace v etice. Hlavní teze zní: kvantifikace, rozvinutá jako komparativní metoda, je žádoucím a užitečným nástrojem v etice. Je užitečná ke sběru a analýze dat a k analýze i řešení morálních dilemat. První polovina práce je věnována analýze a interpretaci díla Henryho Sidgwicka The Methods of Ethics, toto dílo je zdrojem hlavních pojmů i problémů. V druhé polovině práce se věnuji především reflexi kvantitativní metody egoistického hédonismu. Reflexe je z části založena na vybraných problémech, kterými se zabýval Sidgwick: problém zdroje dat, induktivního zobecnění a tzv. paradox hédonismu. A z části na vybraných nových problémech: analýza pojmů slast a bolest, Nozickův myšlenkový experiment The Experience Machine, problematika předsudků a předpokladů, kde navazuji na Dana Arielyho a Jonathana Haidta, a dilema tzv. Těžkých voleb, jehož autorkou je Ruth Changová. V práci je demonstrován kvantitativní přístup ke sběru a analýze dat a k analýze a řešení dilemat.

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis is on the problem of quantification in ethics. Its main claim is: quantification, developed as a comparative method, is a desirable and useful instrument in ethics. It is helpful in data collection and analysis, and in analysis and solving dilemmas. First half of this thesis is dedicated to analysis and interpretation of the work of Henry Sidgwick, called The Methods of Ethics, which serves as an essential source of notions and problems. Main goal of the second half of this thesis is to reflect the quantitative method of egoistic hedonism. This reflexion is based partly on problems that Sidgwick engaged: the problem of the data sources, the application of induction and the paradox of hedonism. And partly on certain new problems: analysis of the notions of pleasure and pain, Nozicks thought experiment The Experience Machine, the problem of prejudices and dispositions, where I follow Dan Ariely and Jonathan Haidt, and the dilemma of Hard Choices, which comes from Ruth Chang. The quantitative approach to data collection and analysis, and analysis and solving dilemmas is demonstrated in the thesis.
