Konglish: the Korean-English Hybrid of South Korea

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the penetration of the English language into the common speech of South Koreans; the influence of English is so strong there that it has given rise to a new layer of language called 'Konglish'. This bachelor's thesis is divided into two parts. The first, the theoretical part, deals with the history of the penetration of the English language into the Korean language and the different types of adaptation. Based on the information obtained through analysis of non-technical articles and results of the questionnaire, the practical part then further examines these words and addresses the main theme of the whole thesis, namely, "To what extent are the words of English origin replacing the original Korean lexicon?" and "To what extent can the 'Konglish' words still be understood by the native speakers of English?".

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá průnikem anglického jazyka do běžné mluvy obyvatel Jižní Koreji; vliv angličtiny je zde natolik silný, že dal vzniknout nové vrstvě jazyka označované slovem Konglish. Bakalářská práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První, teoretická část, se zaměřuje na historii průniku anglického jazyka do jazyka korejského a na způsoby, kterými tato adaptace probíhá. Na základě těchto informací pak praktická část, pomocí rozboru neodborných textů a odpovědí z dotazníku, tato slova dále zkoumá a zodpovídá na hlavní otázky celé práce a to: "Do jaké míry nahrazují původní korejský lexikon slova anglického původu?" a "Do jaké míry rodilí mluvčí stále rozumí slovům označovaným jako "Konglish"?".
