The effect of smoking and alcohol on the developing fetus and its mother

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem kouření a nadměrné konzumace alkoholu na vyvíjející se plod a jeho matku. Kouření a nadměrná konzumace alkoholu jsou rozšířenými návyky, které zásadně ovlivňují zdraví a kvalitu života jednotlivce. V období těhotenství jsou však uvedené látky ještě nebezpečnější, neboť mohou způsobit vážné zdravotní problémy jak pro plod, tak pro jeho matku. Cílem práce je zmapovat současný stav vědeckých poznatků o vlivu kouření a alkoholu na vývoj lidského plodu a na zdraví těhotné matky. Pro těhotnou ženu představují uvedené závislosti riziko zhoršení zdravotního stavu, včetně vyššího výskytu hypertenze, poruch srdečního rytmu a dalších komplikací. Aktivní i pasivní kouření má negativní vliv na schopnost ženy otěhotnět a úspěšně donosit plod. Pasivní kouření také ovlivňuje plodnost a zdraví budoucích generací. Dochází také k ovlivnění placenty, a tudíž může docházet k omezení přenosu živin a kyslíku pro plod. Kouření matek má také další vážné negativní dopady na plod. Zvyšuje riziko syndromu náhlého úmrtí kojence (SIDS). Kouření spolu s alkoholem může mít epigenetické a genetické důsledky pro zárodečné buňky. Dostupné studie o vlivu alkoholu na plodnost žen jsou rozporuplné. Nicméně konzumace alkoholu během těhotenství zvyšuje riziko nepříznivých výsledků těhotenství a poruch fetálního alkoholového spektra.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the effects of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption on the developing fetus and its mother. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are widespread habits that fundamentally affect the health and quality of life of an individual. During pregnancy, however, these substances are even more dangerous as they can cause serious health problems for both the foetus and its mother. The aim of this thesis is to map the current state of scientific knowledge on the effects of smoking and alcohol on human fetal development and on the health of the pregnant mother. For the pregnant woman, these addictions pose a risk of poorer health, including a higher incidence of hypertension, heart rhythm disorders and other complications. Both active and passive smoking have a negative impact on a woman's ability to conceive and successfully carry a foetus to term. Passive smoking also affects fertility and the health of future generations. It also affects the placenta and therefore may reduce the transfer of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. Maternal smoking also has other serious negative effects on the fetus. It increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Smoking, together with alcohol, can have epigenetic and genetic consequences for germ cells. Available studies on the effect of alcohol on female fertility are contradictory. However, alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
