Unmanned aerial vehicles as a security threat

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou užití bezpilotních letadel ze strany násilných nestátních aktérů k násilným i nenásilným účelům. Cílem práce je posoudit platnost hypotézy, že bezpilotní letadla v rukou násilných nestátních aktérů mohou být významnou bezpečnostní hrozbou vůči státům a jejich zájmům. Teoretická část práce se zabývá klíčovými pojmy, možným využitím bezpilotních letadel násilnými nestátními aktéry k násilným i nenásilným, avšak škodlivým účelům a také současnými prostředky a opatřeními k ochraně proti takovému použití. Empirická část práce využívá metodu případových studií, kdy jsou analyzovány reálné případy užití bezpilotních letadel ze strany Hizballáhu a Islámského státu, a uvádí další případy užití bezpilotních letadel. Závěr práce shrnuje zjištěné poznatky, konfrontuje empirická fakta s teoretickými a uvádí možnosti rozšíření výzkumu.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis addresses the issue of violent non-state actors using unmanned aerial vehicles for violent and non-violent purposes. The thesis aims to evaluate the validity of the hypothesis that unmanned aerial vehicles as used by violent non-state actors can present a significant security threat to states and their interests. The theoretical part focuses on key theoretical concepts, possible use of unmanned aerial vehicles by violent non-state actors for violent and non-violent – yet harmful – purposes, and also on the existing means and measures for protecting against such use. The empirical part applies the case study method to analyse the use of unmanned aerial vehicles by Hezbollah and the Islamic State, and lists other cases of when unmanned aerial vehicles were used. The conclusion summarises the findings, confronts the empirical facts with the theoretical ones and highlights opportunities for further research.
