Lee Teng-hui’s Presidential Rhetoric on Taiwanese Identity and Independence

Anotace:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat oficiální prezidentské projevy Lee Teng-huie a definovat rétoriku, kterou používal při řešení témat taiwanské identity, nezávislosti či sjednocení, za použití metody diskurzivní analýzy. Práce nejdřív krátce představí Lee Teng-huiův život a uvede některé reformy, které ovlivnily názor taiwanské populace na zkoumaná témata, a také to, jak je ovlivnily. Hlavní část práce je poté věnována diskurzivní analýze, a je rozdělena podle čtyř významných období během Leeovy doby ve funkci, přičemž v každé z těchto částí si práce klade za cíl definovat rétoriku v tomto období a srovnat ji s jinými obdobími. Z práce na závěr vyplývá, že během čtyř fází Leeovy doby ve funkci došlo k významné změně v rétorice, i když k ní došlo postupně v reakci na různé politické události.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the official presidential speeches of Lee Teng-hui and define the rhetoric he used when dealing with the topics of Taiwanese identity, independence or unification, using the method of discourse analysis. First, the thesis concisely introduces Lee Teng-hui’s life and touches upon some of the policies he promoted that influenced the Taiwanese population’s perception of the examined topics, and presents what the influence was. The main part of the thesis is then devoted to the discourse analysis and is divided according to the four significant eras of Lee’s presidency, where in each of the four parts, the thesis tries to define what characterized the discourse in that particular era and make a comparison with the other periods. Ultimately, it is revealed that a significant shift in discourse occurred within the four stages of the presidency, although it happened gradually in response to various events and policies.
