The Importance of Gender and Sexuality in Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness

Abstract:

This thesis titled "The Importance of Gender and Sexuality in Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness" discusses the importance of gender and sexuality depicted in Ursula K. Le Guin's novel titled The Left Hand of Darkness. Her work depicts civilisations that are both gendered and genderless, and it demonstrates the similarities and the distinctions between them via the behaviours and the decisions the characters make, which will be explored and discussed in this paper. Women are seen as 'reproduction machines,' while men are more likely to receive positions that grant them power, respect, and influence in society. Since there is an established norm for intimate connections between those two genders, sexual orientation plays an integral part in this process as well, and as a result, other orientations are pushed aside, gradually becoming imperceptible. To analyse Le Guin's interpretation of these issues in her novel, the thesis relies on theories about femininity, masculinity, androgyny, sexual orientations by Fayad, Siann and other authors who contributed to those topics by voicing their opinions, providing research and data. The main goal is to demonstrate that living in a society where gender and sexuality are clearly defined, perceived, and accepted in varying ways develops inequality, stereotyping, and oppression. Le Guin presents the argument that unlabelled gender and sexuality can be more egalitarian and beneficial to promote equality and support all members of society in which no one is excluded.

Abstract:

Tato práce s názvem "Význam genderu a sexuality v Levé ruce temnoty od Le Guinové" pojednává o důležitosti pohlaví a sexuality, které jsou vyobrazeny v románu Uršuly K. Le Guinové s názvem Levá ruka temnoty. Její dílo se zaměřuje na civilizace, které jsou jak pohlavní, tak i bezpohlavní, a poukazuje na jejich podobnosti a rozdíly prostřednictvím chování a činů postav, o nichž bude v této práci pojednáno. Ženy jsou často viděny jako "stroje pro rozmnožování", zatímco muži mají ve společnosti mocenské a vlivové postavení, z čehož získávají úctu. Vzhledem k tomu, že mezi těmito dvěma pohlavími existuje norma intimních vztahů, sexuální orientace hraje v tomto procesu důležitou roli, jelikož jsou v jejímž důsledku ostatní skupiny kvůli této normě odsunuty stranou a tím pádem pomalu zapomenuty. Pro účely analýzy interpretace těchto problémů v románu Le Guinové se práce opírá o teorie ženskosti, maskulinity, androgynie, sexuálních orientací od Fayad, Siann a mnoho dalších autorů, kteří přispěli k těmto tématům svými názory, výzkumy, a daty. Hlavním cílem je ukázat, že život ve společnosti, kde jsou pohlaví a sexualita jasně definovány, vnímány a přijaty, vede k problémům jako je nerovnost, stereotypizace a útlak, a Le Guin předložila argumenty o tom, že pohlaví a sexualita by neměly být označovány, aby se podpořila rovnost a prospívalo to všem členům společnosti.
