Extracurricural Activities of Taiwanese Youth and Influence of Parents in their Planning

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou přetěžování (tzv. overscheduling) dětí a mládeže na Taiwanu. Práce nejprve popisuje kulturní kontext a strukturu taiwanského vzdělávacího systému a také krátce představuje jeho historii. Práce si klade za cíl zmapovat mimoškolní aktivity dětí a mládeže (6-18 let) na Taiwanu, včetně jejich časové náročnosti. Dále práce zkoumá, jak velkou roli hrají rodiče při výběru mimoškolních aktivit a plánování volného času. Tato práce představuje případovou studii, kdy byly s devíti studenty (18-23 let) National Chiao Tung University (Jiaotong daxue, 交通大学), která se nachází ve městě Hsinchu (Xinzhu, 新竹) na Taiwanu, provedeny polostrukturované rozhovory. Na základě analýzy těchto rozhovorů a publikací vydávaných Ministerstvem školství Taiwanu bylo zjištěno, že mimoškolní aktivity taiwanských dětí a mládeže se dají kategorizovat do čtyř hlavních kategoriích. Tři z těchto kategorií se dále dělí podle zájmových oblastí. U časové náročnosti mimoškolních aktivit je třeba zohlednit různé proměnné a výsledky jsou díky nim velmi individuální. Polovina respondentů uvedla, že vybírání mimoškolních aktivit a plánování volného času bylo primárně rozhodnutí jejich rodičů. Druhá polovina respondentů uvedla, že toto rozhodnutí bylo učiněno napůl jejich rodiči a napůl jimi samými. Samotný proces vybírání mimoškolních aktivit a plánování volného času měl u respondentů různou podobu, nejčastěji se jednalo o diskusi s rodiči.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the problematics of overscheduling children and teenagers in Taiwan. The thesis first describes the cultural context and structure of the Taiwanese education system and also briefly introduces its history. The main goal of this thesis is to categorize afterschool activities of Taiwanese children and adolescents (6-18 years old) including the durations of the afterschool activities. The thesis also studies how great is the influence of par-ents in planning those afterschool activities and free time. This thesis presents a case study based on nine semi-structured interviews with students of National Chiao Tung University (Jiaotong daxue, 交通大學), which is located in Hsinchu (Xinzhu, 新竹), Taiwan. Based on the analysis of these interviews and publications published by the Ministry of Education Republic of China, has been found that the afterschool activities can be categorized into four main categories. Three of those categories can be further divided by areas of interest. When analysing the duration of afterschool activities, we need to take in consideration different variables which makes the results greatly individual. Half of the respondents stated that choosing afterschool activities and planning their free time was primarily decided by their parents. Another half of the respondents declared that this decision was made by their parents and themselves. The process of choosing afterschool activities and planning free time itself differentiated between the respondents, the discussion with parents was mostly mentioned.
