Attitudes towards LGBT community in relation to personality characteristics in the Czech Republic and Russia

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, zda existuje rozdíl v postoji k příslušníkům LGBT komunity v České republice a Rusku v souvislosti s osobnostními rysy a demografickými charakteristikami. Za příslušníky LGBT komunity v této práci byli považováni gayové, lesbičky, transgender osoby a bisexuálové. V práci byly analyzovány dva vzorky z Ruska (N = 111) a České republiky (N = 116). K určení osobních charakteristik byl použit dotazník BFI-44, pro zjištění sociální vzdálenosti vůči příslušníkům LGBT komunity byla použita Bogardusova škála sociální vzdálenosti. Z výsledků vyplývá, že sociální vzdálenost vůči LGBT lidem v Rusku je větší než v České republice. Kromě toho, v ruském souboru byl nalezen signifikantně negativní, nepříliš těsný vztah otevřenosti se sociální vzdáleností a pozitivní, nepříliš těsný vztah svědomitosti se sociální vzdáleností, zatímco v českém souboru nebyla nalezena žádná korelace osobnostních rysů a sociální vzdálenosti. Muži měli statisticky významně větší vzdálenost k LGBT než ženy v obou zemích. Věk pozitivně koreloval se sociální vzdáleností v ruském souboru, ale ne v českém. V obou souborech měli věřící větší sociální vzdálenost vůči příslušníkům LGBT komunity, ale rozdíl mezi věřícími a ateisty byl v českém vzorku větší. Nebyl však nalezen žádný rozdíl ve vztahu k LGBT lidem v souvislosti s různou úrovní vzdělání nebo velikosti bydliště.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to find out whether there is a difference in attitude towards the members of LGBT community in the Czech Republic and Russia in relation to personal and demographic characteristics. In this work gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual were considered the members of the LGBT community. Two samples: one from Russia (N = 111) and another from Czech Republic (N = 116) were analyzed. The BFI-44 questionnaire was used to determine personal characteristics, and the Bogardus scale of social distance aimed to determine the social distance towards the members of LGBT community. The results demonstrate that social distance towards LGBT people in Russia is greater than in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, a significantly negative not very close relationship of openness and social distance and a positive not very close relationship of conscientiousness and social distance were found in the Russian sample, while no correlation between personality traits and social distance was revealed in the Czech sample. Males had a statistically significantly greater distance towards LGBT than females in both countries. Age positively correlated with social distance in the Russian sample, but not in the Czech sample. In both samples, religious individuals had bigger social distance towards the members of LGBT community, but the difference between religious persons and atheists was bigger in the Czech sample. Meanwhile, no difference was found in relation towards LGBT individuals depending on different levels of education or size of the city.
