Conceptual Metaphor Analysis of Xi Jinping’s OBOR speeches

Abstract:

Pás a stezka (čín. 一带一路, angl. One Belt, One Road) je hlavní rozvojová iniciativa Čínské lidové republiky, která byla představena jejím prezidentem Xi Jinpingem v roce 2013. Její cíl je upevnit spolupráci mezi Čínou a zeměmi v Asii, Evropě a Africe v pěti klíčových oblastech. Kvůli svým odvážným plánům je iniciativa často viděna jako nástroj Číny v usilování o světovou dominanci. Cílem práce je kritická analýza konceptuálních metafor v projevech Xi Jinpinga o iniciativě Pás a stezka. Analyzovaný korpus sestává ze sedmi projevů napsaných čínsky a pronesených před domácím i zahraničním publikem mezi lety 2013 a 2017. Projevy byly publikovány v antologiích Governance of China I. a Governance of China II. Metafory byly mocným prostředkem rétoriky již od antiky. Dnes jsou používány díky přesvědčovacím efektům a schopnosti vzbudit emoce. Politici zapojením metafor legitimizují své politický činy, aby získali podporu voličů nebo aplikují zkušenosti z každodenního života na složité politické koncepty, aby je učinili přístupnějšími a srozumitelnějšími pro veřejnost. Cílem kritické analýzy konceptuálních metafor je identifikovat tyto skryté koncepty v politické rétorice. Použitými metodami jsou kritická analýza metafor (Critical Metaphor Analysis, CMA) vyvinutá Jonathanem Charteris-Blackem a postup interpretace metafor (Metaphor Interpretation Procedure, MIP) vyvinutý skupinou Pragglejaz Group. CMA je kombinací kritické diskurzívní analýzy, korpusové analýzy a kognitivní sémantiky. Její výhoda spočívá v zapojení pragmatiky, která umožňuje zkoumání nejen metafory, ale i kontextu, ve kterém je metafora použita, a tudíž tato metoda umožňuje identifikovat metody přesvědčování. Důvodem pro začlenění MIP je minimalizace subjektivity autora při identifikaci metafor. Zjištění pramenící z analýzy mohou pomoci hlubšímu porozumění skrytých myšlenek v projevech o Pásu a stezce a rozšířit znalosti Xiho politické rétoriky. Dále, čtenář práce může použít získané základní povědomí o konceptuálních metaforách k rozvoji kritického hodnocení a povědomí o politické rétorice jako takové.

Abstract:

One Belt, One Road is the China’s major development initiative proposed by Xi Jinping in 2013. Its goal is to strengthen cooperation in five key areas between China and the countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Because of its daring plans is the initiative often seen as the instrument of China in pursuing global dominance. The aim of the present thesis is the critical analysis of the conceptual metaphors in the speeches of Chinese president Xi Jinping regarding One Belt, One Road Initiative. The analysed corpus consists of seven speeches written in Chinese language delivered before domestic as well as international audience between the years 2013 and 2017. The speeches were published in anthologies of Xi’s speeches and interviews Governance of China vol I. and Governance of China vol. II. Metaphor has been a powerful rhetorical device since the ancient times and is still used because of its persuasive effects and the ability to arouse emotions. Politicians with the use of metaphor legitimize their political actions to gain support from the electorate or apply experience known from the ordinary life to complex political concepts to make them intelligible to the public. The goal of the critical analysis of conceptual metaphors is to identify these underlying concepts hidden in the political rhetoric. The methods used are Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) developed by Jonathan Charteris Black and Metaphor Interpretation Analysis (MIP) developed by Pragglejaz Group. CMA is the combination of Critical Discourse Analysis, corpus analysis and cognitive semantics. Its advantage is the incorporation of pragmatics which enables to explore not only metaphor itself, but also the context in which it is used and therefore to identify its persuasive effects. The reason for including MIP is to minimize subjectivity while determining candidate metaphors. The findings resulting from the analysis can contribute to deeper understanding of the underlying ideas behind One Belt, One Road initiative and to expand the knowledge of Xi’s political rhetoric. Moreover, the reader of the thesis can use the gained basic knowledge of conceptual metaphors to develop critical evaluation and awareness about political rhetoric as such.
